An extraordinary paragraph. buff.ly/uH5ykhX
The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they're the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesivebecause of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about "Western civilization," while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Watched by Branson Reese 28 Apr 2022

Abrams isn't a man so much as he's an avatar of cultural entropy. If you make something popular enough eventually you will die or sell it off and and a person in thick rimmed glasses whose main artistic vision is that he loves to have meetings will take it and sandblast it until it's nothing. I hate to see this happen here but maybe it's good that this happened. Maybe every franchise should collapse into a version of itself that makes shareholders nod and shake each others' hands. We should learn to speak in a language that rich people who don't dream can't comprehend.

lose with dignity and stop tinkering at the margins of whatever you're going to disavow after it passes. stop saying that voters don't understand subtlety and then leaving your dumb fingerprints all over every bad thing.

politicians should spend less time managing expectations of by telling voters what a minority party can't pass and instead engage in this four-step process:

1) say what you think is right
2) obstruct whatever isn't that
3) lose if that's how it goes
4) remind voters who passed the evil law

I asked her something like is it devastating for
you how many awful people there are in the world or
instead is it heartening how many good people there
are in spite of that and she said she needed to think
about that one for a while.
I wake up every day and think no one is going to
stop this she said after some silence. No one? And then
resign myself to that fact and start the whole process
all over again.
I am not naive she said. I did not just learn about
how the world works today. Over the past year. It’s

just that my stubborn belief in the goodness of people
has been so hard to finally and utterly kill off. And it

most. But enough of them that the balance doesn’t
make a difference. They are worse than we are not.

Would love to. I thought Hampert is a better visual joke (just changing one letter) but Halpork sounds closer to Halpert than Hampert does, to me! (I did almost go with Ham Halpert though!)

You ever think about how the Roman Senate kept meeting centuries into the reigns of emperors. Hanging out, shooting the shit, giving speeches, and play-acting that their positions of privilege remained positions of power.
