30.12.2024 06:28 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A little bit of 2024.....
It's been a year full of amazing people and incredible field trips. I'm very lucky to be working on some great projects with the best team.
But it's also been a year of a lot of rejection for grants, awards and other things. It sucks but that's life!
Hoping for a quieter wet season in FNQ this year in terms of rain, but water temperatures are unfortunately already very warm.
20.12.2024 02:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0These big climatic events can be devastating, but ecosystems can recover if they have time. However, with climate change we could start to see more frequent and more intense weather, not to mention the added pressure from warm waters causing bleaching.
20.12.2024 02:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We did see some seagrass within the survey area, still surviving despite all of this pressure.
We are continuing to work with Traditional Owner groups in the region to survey deeper habitats from boats and we will survey again next year to understand more about how these habitats can recover.
A year on from cyclone Jasper we are sharing some of our findings from surveys of the intertidal coastal habitats from Cairns to Cooktown.
The record breaking floods caused extensive damage to mangroves. We didn't see any live corals on the fringing reefs at all, they were still smothered in mud
Final field trip of the year wrapped up with the Jabalbina Ranger team! Monitoring subtidal habitats to understand post cyclone recovery of seagrass and corals almost a year after Jasper came through. Great to be able to get some up to date information on seagrass in the region.
18.12.2024 08:50 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0After all this time studying seagrass in Queensland I finally found myself some Halophila tricostata. This species is only found in Queensland AND this one was flowering. It's not super rare but we don't see it often so I was very excited to find it off the Daintree!
12.12.2024 09:33 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah BOM says it's 92% but it sure feels like 102% π₯΅
07.12.2024 08:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0You too Phil!! You'll be pleased to hear the humidity is already unbearable up here so it's going to be steamy one.

A ficus plant with Neptune ball decorations
A Neptune ball/shell wreath
A dog looking happy (?) in an elf hat
Now that December fieldwork is over, it's time to bust out the seagrass reindeers, neptune ball decorations and of course make Franklin pose in his elf hat....
07.12.2024 08:28 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Hey folks! Interested in seagrass and other coastal submerged aquatic planty things? This starter pack is for you!
Itβs small for now, so hit me up if youβd like to be added!

I'm a bit late to the party but very excited to see many old twitter friends here. I'm Abbi and I'm a researcher at James Cook University studying seagrass ecosystems and working with communities here in Cairns and Port-Douglas on coral reef stewardship projects.
