09.02.2026 22:10 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0In fact, the concept of only reading non-fiction when it's entertaining is actually quite concerning. The informational and empowering prospect of knowledge is not centered, amusement is.
Most people suggest that we need to read more fiction, but the opposite is true.
I would even go so far as to say that pushing past "boring" titles is a civic responsibility. A well-informed and knowledge-seeking populace is how a democracy survives. You don't get there by endlessly reading fiction or only choosing entertaining non-fiction books.
08.02.2026 20:35 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Non-fiction is so good. People today seem to have an averse reaction to "dry, dense" titles, but these are the most enriching. And, ironically, they're what would fortify us the most in times where ignorance reigns and escapism is the norm.
08.02.2026 20:35 โ ๐ 10 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Now that Iโm working an 8-5, itโs becoming so much more difficult to find that precious time to read, and tbh sometimes I donโt feel like reading at all. But thatโs exactly why I try to persist and read a couple of pages.

A prime minister catches on to something most of us knew 11 years ago.
Apple & Google removed ICE tracking apps in their app stores.
TikTok reportedly suppressed videos criticizing ICE & the shooting of Alex Pretti.
Meta blocked Facebook groups tracking ICE & links to a database of agents that the government wants to keep secret.
Big Tech is enabling Trump's regime.
The parents of Alex Pretti have retained a former federal prosecutor who helped Minnesota's attorney general convict the police officer who kneeled on George Floyd's neck of murder. https://to.pbs.org/3ZA2HfU

There may be some niche examples somewhere, but I cannot think of any system, natural or human-made, that isn't strengthened by more diversity. Ecology, biology, economics, politics, agriculture... am I missing anything?
This lesson is reflected everywhere and in everything.
In spite of the horrible things that are happening, I have a lot of hope. The US empire is actively, precipitously nosediving into their own demise. Weakening themselves on the global scale. Universally loathed.
Its end is near.
A video of Alex Pretti reading out the final salute of an unnamed veteran he cared for until the end of his life in the ICU, posted to Facebook by his son.

It's just that the people who have been saying it in my lifetime have been saying it in response to stuff like the existence of Hannukah, and Black people, and the Spanish language.
