Just being able to cast that wide net allowed me to actually have friends. And given that I grew up poor (and never really gained material wealth), having the internet provided a ton of entertainment on the cheap, too.

Pretty sure I have ADHD, and the internet truly is/was a social game changer.

Playing an MMO and being able to chat w/ people around the world has probably been my only saving grace, socially, because it's difficult to find like-minded people in this area.

I suspect age also plays an important role. I think Gen X and Millennials were probably some of the most prolific "netizens". Many of us are in our 30's+ now, and maturation plays into this.

I still wouldn't consider the internet a "safe space" for most. Especially when you factor things like sexism, racism, political affiliations and retaliation and things of that nature, though it's not as bad as it was even just a decade ago. Though Idk if that's because it actually got better...

I definitely think the "Wild West" days have come to a close, which leaves me with mixed feelings. To be honest, Big Bro has been pulling the strings for a while, now. And corporate did its corporate thing and turned most of the net into marketing.
