19.01.2026 21:30 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Unexpected email from Jonny Griffiths telling me there's a new 2026 update of his RISPS book, that's great investigations for impressionable A Level students. Download it now from www.risps.co.uk with links to Geogebra and Excel files

Weβve gone for FS1 and D1. Mechanics seemed to be love or hate so we went for more broad appeal. Current 13s were dubious about D1 but now say theyβre glad I chose it. Y12 this year all do computing so are into D1. I find FS1 helps them smash single maths stats out the park.

Thanks (secret) Santa! Obviously I feigned offence at why Santa thought I needed it. Iβll look forward to getting stuck in over the break @edsouthall.bsky.social

Awesome, thank you for taking the time to get back to me.
27.10.2025 11:50 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I know the square roots of 121. I know x^2 = 121 has solutions +-11. I know sqrt(121) =11 and radical121 = 11. When asked the specific question βwhat is the square root of 121?β What is the answer (i.e does it mean the function)? Where can I go for a definitive answer & who decides?
27.10.2025 11:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0#ALevelMaths back when I was on twitter, there were some lovely people offering mock oxbridge interviews to students, but I never took them up on it. Now Iβve got two great students who I know would benefit from the experience. Can anyone here point me in the right direction?
22.09.2025 15:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 1#ALevelMaths Iβve been asked about retrieval in our A-Level lessons. Does anyone do anything particularly successful that theyβre happy to share? Iβm nervous at the prospect of giving up any content time, but relying on them doing it independently means someβ¦donβt.
Currently I set drfrost for it.
I have one. If youβre happy to pay the postage you can have it! It is quite heavy though
10.09.2025 10:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Series of questions where students need to find intersections
Always like thinking about how to get students to do something tricky by slowly building up the skill - I hadn't seen many "easier" finding intersections questions so enjoyed making my own! #MathsToday #ALevelMaths

21.08.2025 13:32 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0For Edexcel, the idea that someone missed a grade because they put Β£32.5 not Β£32.50 makes me sad. Theyβll be someone somewhere for whom it made the difference.

@alevelscandal.bsky.social not sure this really deals with points raised. Covers their back but Ofqual should have done more.

Theyβll need something to do as in our place they do single maths separately, but have already done the single integration, so can work on these independently then
05.08.2025 10:23 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thanks for these Paddy. Unless you object, my plan is to give them to my 13 FM students and ask them for full written solutions. They need practice explaining their answers/writing fully, so not giving them answers to check will be a nice way of forcing them to write convincingly π
05.08.2025 10:21 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Hi Tom. Thanks for all the updates & info on this. Out of interest, what do you think would be the best way forward in terms of grading? Iβm struggling to think of any way that doesnβt have substantial negativesβ¦
04.08.2025 16:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Tom I appreciate your efforts! Iβm not on X, so it was handy for me that you reposted the long thread from there. I basically printed it off and took it to SLT. π
09.07.2025 09:17 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Single maths we do 1st principles as well. Itβs new, produces something easy to sell as βusefulβ & is a good test of their expanding brackets/algebra, so I find sets the tone of the course. Recently not as βnewβ as I do it for AQAL2 fm, but itβs easy to extend for those that have done it already
19.06.2025 16:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We used to offer AS as an option, so are only very slowly introducing some y13 content to Y12. Iβll admit though, itβs a super handy time saver to be able to give an AS paper as an end of year, and with βrealβ grade boundaries, so we wonβt go too far from that for now
