Today's large aftershock of the M8.8 #earthquake in Kamchatka, Russia produced small, non-dangerous tsunami waves in Hawaii. Here are the sea-level records from Kahului, Maui and Hilo, Hawaii Island.

We recorded this evening's M7.4 aftershock #earthquake offshore of Kamchatka at all three of our #RaspberryShake stations in Hawaii (Makakilo, Hilo, and Mountain View), about 5000 km or 3000 miles away.

We should have noted that here in Hawaii the constellation is also known as "Ka Makau Nui o Māui," Maui's Big Fish Hook.

Before leaving Hilo we checked out the newly-repainted Coconut Point Lighthouse. It now shows the heights of the #tsunami waves that have struck the city, labeled by the years they happened.

An upgraded model to our portable STOMP device (ver. 2 on the left, ver. 1 on the right). The new model has a simple one-button operation and easier setup with reduced cabling.

The first earthquake recorded by our new station in Mountain View, Hawaii County (Big Island).

We're in Hilo for the rest of the week helping out at the Pacific Tsunami Museum. It's across the street from Hilo Bay, where you can still see evidence of last month's #tsunami . We also set up a new Raspberry Shake seismograph in Mountain View and it recorded its first earthquake last night.

PTWC just ended the Tsunami Advisory for Hawaii, meaning that tsunami hazards for this state are over.

Tsunami Advisories (offshore hazard alerts) remain in effect for Hawaii and parts of North America, and here's why: The tsunami is still active, just not as big, and can still cause weird rip currents and other marine hazards. Here's current sea-level data from Kahului, Maui, and Crescent City, CA.

The #Tsunami Warning for Hawaii is now downgraded to an Advisory, meaning that the evacuation is over but a hazard still exists offshore. The largest recorded amplitudes were 1.74 m (5.7 ft.) in Kahului, and 1.5 m (4.9 ft.) in Hilo. Northern California is still under a Tsunami Warning. tsunami.gov

While I encourage everyone to use tsunami.gov, unfortunately the site is a bit glitchy. The banner at the top says "Advisory" and that's true for coastlines in North America, but Hawaii remains in a "Warning" or coastal evacuation situation.

This Observatory has been preparing a set of streaming cameras and we're still troubleshooting them. But here's one of our cameras zoomed in on Barber's Point Harbor. It may be possible to observe the tsunami waves there. We'll see.

Hawaii is now under a Tsunami Warning. That means evacuate coastal areas. tsunami.gov

The Kamchatka #earthquake has a revised magnitude of M8.7, and tsunami.gov now has wave-height forecasts for coastlines expected to receive dangerous waves, including Hawaii. The nearest deep-ocean instrument recorded a 0.6 m / 2 ft amplitude, which is significant.

The images below are from our seismograph in Makakilo. The earthquake is so big that its shaking lasted longer than the window of our usual graphic, so I've included another to show more of the earthquake.

The M8.0 #earthquake that just occurred in Kamchatka has prompted #tsunami hazard guidance for Russia, Japan, the Aleutians, Hawaii, and Guam/CNMI. Please see tsunami.gov for the latest information.
