I called the family to ask if it was ok to send the items. Unsurprisingly, the wife cried and said "yes, and thank you for remembering us". We sometimes forget, but sometimes thoughtfulness and small acts of kindness can mean the world to the family who is left behind. @3wishesprogram.bsky.social

A physician at a hospital that I helped start a @3wishesprogram.bsky.social told me they lost a patient with a very strong Irish heritage. Per the family's request, his family was allowed to put a shot of Irish whiskey down his nasogastric tube as part of a final toast!

Omgosh I love the latest @3wishesprogram.bsky.social fingerprint painting so much. The patient loved owls and our volunteer artist didn’t disappoint! I love how the fingerprints were made into twinkles around the owl.

Other day, a patient unexpectedly died & the team was too shaken to offer family @3wishesprogram.bsky.social before they left. Today nurses created this framed EKG, heartbeats in a bottle, & gathered words to create a word cloud, which I’ll send. Examples like these confirm 3wishes is for HCW too.

At #CHEST2025, I met with Dr. Dan Fein from Montefiore Medical Center in NY. He shared with me how they had modelled their @3wishesprogram.bsky.social after ours at #UCLA (these slides are from his slide deck). They are going strong after 1year! This makes me so happy! #Kindness is spreading!

Besides writing a convincing letter, how can I help expedite getting a Visa for a sibling in Turkey to come see a dying patient in the US? @3wishesprogram.bsky.social

One of my favorite parts of #Chest2025 was meeting up with @mhsmith.bsky.social. He has done a fabulous job at leading a @3wishesprogram.bsky.social at @uwmedicine.bsky.social! I’m so proud of all the work he has done! #Kindness is spreading!

Got an email from the German Interdisciplinary Assoc for Intensive Care & Emerg Medicine, who thinks a "webinar on @3wishesprogram.bsky.social would be excellent topic for our audience in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. We would like to raise awareness of the project in Europe". How cool is that?

I have a grant that gives a colleague a small amount of salary support to lead the @3wishesprogram.bsky.social at a safety-net hospital. She told me she used that $$ to grant a wish--she got a plane ticket for a young patient dying of refractory leukemia to go back to his home country. Oh my heart
