As a physician, I have no magic elixir to cure criminality. Violence is multifactorial. It is societal.

Don't buy the "mental health will fix this" nonsense.

It's honestly amazing. I can do a full H&P, review medical history, labs, do a physical exam, and consent the patient to medications, and still get asked at the end, "So when do I see the doctor?"

SURPRISE, I'M THE DOCTOR!

- patients and the one ED doc who called me "the girl over there." Happy to be on a first name basis with anyone working with me in the hospital...unless they're that guy.

I never insist on being called Doctor outside the hospital, for sure, but I do often find it necessary to underscore my title with patients while inside the hospital. If I don't, as a woman I'm always assumed to be the nurse or social worker. Nurses and SWers are awesome, it's just not my role.
