We have a decades of scholarship on how pro-democracy forces win in competitive authoritarian systems: they form a united opposition that brings together people with otherwise profound political disagreements.

They are more likely to do the right thing if they see they have political and moral support from constituents.

If you are the constituent of one of these elected representatives standing up for what is morally and legally right in the face of pressure from a powerful and dangerous administration, call their office to thank them and to tell them to keep it up. It's not easy for a politician to be brave.

Occurs to me that Trump's entire regime consolidation strategy is to persuade everyone through displays of force that the regime is already consolidated and there's no point in resisting. Which I don't think will work, but also shows how important public acts of noncompliance are.

Spent the morning with my local Indivisible group, writing letters to help ensure that Pennsylvania voters can successfully cast their ballots.

Thank you @schatz.bsky.social for doing the right thing today in the Senate and pointing the way for your colleagues. This is the leadership we need to fight for our democracy.

That is the first order of business. Strategy and tactics will follow once we have a clearly articulated, unified opposition movement.

There is a coup going on right now to overthrow the government from within, and it is important that our elected representatives speak out forcefully and clearly about what is happening so that everyone in the country understands.

Unable to get through on the phone to my senators DC or local offices. This means a lot of people are calling, which is good. We should all keep calling. The message is simple:

"There has already been a blatant unconstitutional and criminal takeover of government functions, and our representatives are responding as if it's no big deal. So many of us are here, waiting to be inspired by strong leadership, ready to be mobilized. Fight for us."

So I said, "Well, yes. Where do I start and how long have you got?" Ha ha. "Actually, what I'd most like the senator to know, is that I'm so disappointed with the Democrats' tepid response to what is happening, which is not meeting the moment. This isn't on Cantwell, it's on all of them.
