Fβ€” the @nytimes.com for simply reprinting Trump propaganda on a major story, if would seem?

I spent decades at Columbia. I’m withdrawing my fall course due to its deal with Trump | Rashid Khalidi The university’s draconian policies and new definition of antisemitism make much teaching impossible

Columbia’s adopting the IHRA definition of antisemitism and creating the infrastructure to enforce it is working as intended β€” here, by driving distinguished faculty who are willing to teach popular courses even in retirement our of the classroom. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Leading Israeli author David Grossman calls Gaza war a 'genocide' ***

… Jewish literature syllabi will run afoul of some committee hounding faculty & students into β€œprotecting Jews” by policing what gets taught now that Grossman, with as much pain as this caused him, spoke of what Israel has been conducting in Gaza as genocide? www.haaretz.com/israel-news/... 2/2

'With Immense Pain and a Broken Heart' | Leading Israeli Author David Grossman Calls Gaza War a 'Genocide'

World-renowned Israeli writer David Grossman said coming to the realization that Israel is committing genocide was extremely painful, but he now has a moral obligation to speak up: 'I feel an inner urgency to do the right thing, and now is the time to do it'

In many ways, reading David Grossman’s novel β€œSee Under: Love” (1989 English translation by Betsy Rosenberg) in college over two decades ago got me into interested in literature, and especially literature of the Jewish experience and memory. How long before placing Grossman’s work on my … 1/2

Do read the Brown agreement w/ the fascists. #11 + 12 is the deal to discriminate against trans folkβ€”including policing access to medical careβ€”to "protect women"; adjacent to that, #13, is the commitment to destroy free speech to "protect Jews." Did Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward identify their source in their Watergate reporting? Etc., etc. Protecting identities of sources β€” unless they act in legally-protected whistleblower capacity β€” is part and parcel of investigative journalism.

"American officials and academics who, like me, lived in Hungary...would often tell ourselves stories to explain this submissiveness: that docility is rooted in Hungary’s oppressive communist past, that its democracy was simply too young to withstand a strongman. Then I returned to the US...."

I mean, if someone’s reading Bret Stephens opineβ€”during the week that deliberate mass starving of the whole population of Gaza is also being widely reportedβ€”that it’s not genocide and sighing with relief about their alignment of opinionsβ€”well, that person’s head is way up their own sorry ass.

NYT couldn’t come up with anyone slightly more trustworthy than Bedbugs Stephens to refute Omer Bartov’s actually expert conclusion they published a few days before? Also: if you happen to be reading Bret Stephens to soothe yourself into thinking this isn’t genocide, your head is way up your own ass

Zey pekhnen oyfn pisk far hungerβ€”they are swelling up and starving to death. I heard that expression often. In my native village of Lanowitz, that’s what Jews used to say about a family that was dirt poor. In those days that phrase was just a phrase, a kind of metaphor, and no one bothered to think about its literal meaning. Those words must have originated when famine, especially among the peasants, was a more common occurrence. More recent generations didn’t actually have to suffer that way. In those days Jewish poverty meant β€œa thin slice of bread, potatoes Sunday and potatoes Monday, tea and bread, bread and tea, may we all be spared from such a treat.” That was how we used to describe what it meant to be hungry. But children in the Warsaw Ghetto would have regarded such expressions as descriptions of luxury. Potatoes every day? You get hot tea and bread? Maybe real tea, with real sugar?

Once I met a Jewish refugee in the street, a weaver from Lodz. He was carrying a pound of turnips to eat with his wife on the Sabbath. β€œGod favored me with a bargain.” Those were his exact words. A bargain for sixty groshn. Today that Jew is no longer alive. He was the young grandfather of an odd girl who would get free soups. Her name was Topche.

Anyway, now we know exactly what the phrase pekhnen oyfn pisk means. There are plenty of opportunities to see it up close in the Jewish quarter of Warsaw. The special color of the cheeks, the little swellings on both sides of the nose, the bleakness in the eyes … I think that each director of a kitchen has become a kind of expert in this area. Hunger is one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. We need a new Goya to come and draw the worst sufferings of this new β€œJewish War” that the Crazy Man is waging against the Jewish children of the sealed city.

On hunger and starvationβ€”from Rokhl Auerbach’s diary entry from the Warsaw ghetto, as included in her later memoir and translated from Yiddish by Samuel Kassow in β€œWarsaw Testament” (White Goat Press, 2024; winner of National Jewish Book Award for memoir). I wish it didn’t make one think of Gaza…

Blaming Jewish voters for his loss is quite rich of a politician who deems himself to look out for how he perceived the supposed interests of Jews, ain’t it?

The leak that Bondi made 1,000 DOJ attorneys comb through the Epstein files and supposedly flag Trump’s name in them makes me think that there may be some deliberate effort afoot to make sure we get a more principled and less chaotic fascist JD Vance installed atop the much-expanded executive soon.

Bartov was not. In fact, in November 2023 he argued that it was not genocide then (also NYT opinion essay). By several months later his conclusion shifted which is why it’s even more reliable and by now became firm.
