This was not a budget cut per se, but mainly a result of the NIH interim leadership canceling the decision meetings where peer reviewed grants are approved for funding. Grant reviews also postponed. They basically shut off the flow for typical grant award approvals. βEffectively cutβ for sure!

Warren blasts NIH leaders amid funding disruptions
"Neither of you appear to have answers about what is going on at this agency," Sen. Elizabeth Warren wrote.
Donald Trump's attack on science is turning back the clock on research that saves lives and powers our economy in Massachusetts and beyond.
Not on my watch.
I'm pressing Trump's health leaders for answers now.

A tweet from "Covie" (@covie_93) that reads:
"Speaker Mike Johnson from the great state of 'Louisnana' wants to get rid of the Department of Education."
Below the tweet is an image of a large blue curtain featuring an emblem with a pelican and the words "SUPREME COURT" and "CONFIDENCE." The word "LOUISNANA" is prominently misspelled instead of "LOUISIANA." The mistake is highlighted with a red circle. In the foreground, three judges in black robes are seated at a table.
Canβt make this up.

Gene editing technology began by people studying salt marshes. Ozempic began by folks studying the venom of Gila Monsters. Support for basic science has empowered us to understand our world. Tethering it to applications health has transformed and saved countless lives.

Sensation is dispensable for the maturation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex
Vertebrates stabilize gaze using a neural circuit that transforms sensed instability into compensatory counterrotation of the eyes. Sensory feedback tunes this vestibulo-ocular reflex throughout life....
Big paper from @paigel.bsky.social in our lab:
Sensory feedback is always crucial for proper development, right? Wrong!
Crazier still, the motor system is the slowest part of a developing reflex circuit!
Surprises abound in this bluetorial cβmon alongβ¦.

I am saddened by the passing of Lynn Landmesser, a pioneer in neural development and cornerstone of our department. When I arrived, she was still teaching students to fabricate electrodes and dazzling junior faculty with stories about the history of the field. She will be missed.
