As you can guess: this is not a failure for hydrogen in any sense of the word. The goal was not to use hydrogen in gas grids, it was to offer a cynically fabricated promise of a solution to allow for more time to kill regulations and fight electrification.

The 2025 update of the Global Carbon Budget is out.
While fossil CO2 emissions rise again and carbon sinks are weakened by climate change, deforestation emissions are down and many countries decarbonise their energy.
No global emissions peak yet though.

Important new research published last month in Nature Sustainability shows that the oil and gas industry has only a 1.42% share of global renewable energy.
Only 20% of the 250 largest oil and gas companies operate any renewable energy projects.

NEW RESEARCH: Researchers from Imperial College London conclude: Safe CO₂ underground storage capacity is far lower than previous estimates due to leakage risks, seismicity, engineering limits, and geopolitics.
At best, CCS looks like a scarce resource, not an unlimited backstop.
A few days ago, Berlin opened a new stretch of urban motorway, with the stated aim to reduce congestion.
Today, the stretch was temporarily closed because of too much congestion.
