I joined the editorial team of an amazing journal committed to equity work. I'm surprised and disappointed: assistant professors say yes to reviews, and associate and full professors decline or donโ€™t respond. Everyone is busy. But if youโ€™ve climbed the academic ladder, steady it for others.

Maybe I'm off topic by pointing this out. I went to U Idaho from 2002 - 2005 and this kind of extremist stuff was all over even then. The article's point that it seems more systematic now is profound, but conservative attacks on higher ed in the state have a looooonnngg history.

They say "If NIC goes under, students will either need to pay out-of-state tuition in nearby Spokane, Washington, move south, or abandon their aspirations of higher education" Pullman WA is an 8 minute bike ride away from Moscow and it has community colleges on the WSU campus

I just donated to Pasadena Humane Society in honor of my best buddy, Kozmo who passed last March. If you have the means, see if you can help too, as they support those who can't evacuate with their four-legged family members!

The Lie That Won't Die Why We're Still Talking About Autism and Vaccines

My latest on the lie that won't die, and why we're still talking about autism and vaccines.

Tracing the history back to "refrigerator mothers," I argue that to answer this question, we have to grapple with our culture of mother-burden and mother-blame.

How often do you write in it? Every day? It's a strategy I'd love to try but I imagine I'd do it once or twice and then forget.

Is it real though? I show this in my intro to stats classes and the students always just assume it's satire or something

Hang in there. It's the time of year when grading piles up, days get dark so early, and it's cold outside. It makes showering and emailing someone feel like a huge win in the productivity department. Conjuring for us both to have a productive Tuesday

Has Ending Suspensions for Willful Defiance Improved Discipline Disparities? Evidence from California In 2013, the California state legislature took steps to narrow disparities in exclusionary discipline between student groups, especially for students with disabilities and students of color.

What happened after California banned suspensions for willful defiance in grades K-3?

Short answer: suspensions didn't decline faster than they already had been, and large disparities by race/SES/IEP remained.

Hi! Just wanted to introduce myself. Iโ€™m a special ed prof primarily interested in literacy for multiply marginalized students with dis/abilities. I spend most of my free time with family, watching TV, or reading. Happy to see both new and familiar faces over here and hoping to post more!

If you find a way, let me know. I find I can focus on two or three of these things at a time, at the expense of all the others (usually service and weight training get the short shrift)

May stillness find you.ย
May ease flow toward you.ย
May you give yourself the gift of boundaries.ย
When you get pulled in a million directions, may you discover the gift of cutting strings.
