That's a wonderful problem to have

Obviously the choice isn't always so simple - we wear that mask so we fit in, we keep the status quo, make ourselves approachable and easy to digest. You rely on your art for income, and your choices directly impact your livelihood.

I'm not the only one who's tired of putting on a smile saying "I'm fine" every day when I'm not. I think we need to be uncomfortable more, confront those difficult feelings head-on. These are a normal part of the human experience, denying our internal realities wears us down and holds us back.

I can totally understand why you would move towards safe, easily digestible, comfortable content - many others have been doing the same.

Personally, I prefer the real stuff. Art that's raw and genuine; it's relatable, it's validating, it reminds me that I'm not broken, and helps me feel less alone.

My favorite is when you get the ones that have the extra toasty flat edges, it feels special, like finding a shiny.

Don't be shy about making alternate accounts to achieve this separation. You can make an alt that's just for rest and recovery, you can always come back when you are in the right headspace for it.

I do have preferences, but similarly I can cope without them most of the time... i.e. usually I'll still choose to eat even with a suboptimal utensil, rather than not eat.

having utensil preferences is actually pretty typical... have you ever seen the insane variety of options available? sizes, shapes, colors, weights, balance, finish, etc.

the difference I've observed in autistic people such as myself, is in the strength/frequency/atypicality of those "preferences"

For one, labeling somebody as a terrorist on mere suspicion.

For two, taking anything this administration decides to label as terrorism seriously. Are you going to start labeling trans people as terrorists too? Fuck off.

yeah, it's right there on the edge too. use a little isopropyl (use high percentages, like 90%) and a toothpick and you should be able to remove most of it.

As much as I might feel frustrated or let down at times, I still love her and I still recognize that she's trying to improve and figure out ways to support me and my sister better every day.

Real. I have a decent amount of childhood trauma, but... I do know my mom was trying her best to figure things out and give me a good chance of succeeding. It wasn't perfect, especially in hindsight, she knows that too - she did much better for my younger sister.

Yup yup. As an AuDHDer I don't enjoy extended small talk, sure, that's frustrating. But often, with the right people, that small talk is the precursor to the BIG talk. It is the trailhead to the path you take deep into the woods and get absolutely lost in conversation, and I LOVE that.

adding to this, most times people I've known who have gotten in-trouble at work for their social media posts... it's because they were vagueposting venting about very specific situations at work with specific employees... that said employees found and recognized and reported.

Using alts and different names/email addresses can be a good way to get around this, as long as you're careful about avoiding posting any personally-identifiable-information. Don't post about work, where you live, places you go, names or pictures of yourself or people you associate with, etc.

I'm so glad you were there for him in that moment, supportive and understanding. You knew he was right and rather than deny the reality of the situation you helped find a better path.

It also makes me happy to know he didn't have to go through as much of what I have... it's been a rough decade lol

AuDHD, could never focus on homework, hated busy work, no study skills, yet... always attentive in class, loved learning, perfect test scores, GED at 16 no studying.

Definitely experience alexithymia for myself, although when interacting with others I feel very in-tune with THEIR emotions. Often I can sense their feeling before they can fully identify and express it themselves.

I always attributed it to hyper-empathy, possibly trauma-related in my case.
