Ingested and taken over by tech companies with super shaky stock evaluations has the potential to be catastrophic, though.

This is a tough one and a conversation I’ve wanted to have a lot, largely because I think the death of the tech industry is very possible and could’ve happening soon. Why that happens, the ways in which we connect and tell people about our work will be just gone. Completely. What’s next then?

the thing about social media is that like a lot of successful technological developments it sort of disseminates its own myth -- these myths are I think always (avoid saying "always" without numbers to back it up tho) progress fables rich with notions of inevitability

Movies are generally fucking terrible right now and even when they’re good they’re mostly produced the same with no discernible visual stamp or style and I see less and less that truly sticks with me anymore.

I think Bluesky CEO was supposed to be a little resume plumping detour but then users flooded in from Twitter and Boss Lady was briefly seduced by the idea of being a Riot Grrrl Anti-Caesar… until actual decisions had to be made. Then she began to resent the users for ruining her cosplay

Absolutely - also true on a political level and the sooner people can fully understand that, the better off we’ll be. I just do think the tech scene is PARTICULARLY evil and there’s a tendency for the CEO’s to try & act like influencers of a sort in away you don’t see in other industries. It blows.

I don’t think that’s entirely true, but I just think the kind of capital that flows through tech and the only ways in which you can get it, combined with the snake oil nature of cash flow and inflated stock evaluations, make it particularly impossible.

Guess the thing to fully ingest and acknowledge going forward - it is not possible to ethically run a company in the tech industry, at least in this current environment. It may never be. The tech world is a total wash. At least everything is tied up in it completely. No idea what’s next.

I saw someone say Paul Simon Graceland and I hate that album and think you can find a lot of parallels between the two (mid career crisis, stealing other people’s better ideas, safe producer choice)
