Self-Generation Incentive Program
The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) helps qualified LADWP residential customers install solar and battery storage systems by providing financial incentives. This program supports clean energy...
This is amazing: @ladwp.com, the Los Angeles utility, has launched a program that will install solar+battery systems on qualifying low-to-moderate-income households, *for free*.
Yes: free.

I keep thinking about this and I was wrong about HVAC being .001 of a data centers energy use. The cooling is a huge part, but my point about not efficiencying our way out of the problem stands.

I think LEED and Green Globes are in the slightly less bad category. Passive House seems like a great standard. US DOE zero energy ready homes is also pretty good. PH is the only I know of one for larger buildings. It wouldnβt work for a data center or any other industrial type end use though.

Its got to be a tiny fraction of the data centers being proposed and actually built. Now if they could do something with the terms of the contracts they sign when they procure services, that might be something!

more efficient HVAC and lighting or what ever is like .001 of the load in a 100MW facility full of NVIDA chips humming away 24/7365. Efficiency doesnβt solve this problem. USGBC does great stuff. I love green buildings. But its not the tool we need. Also, how many data centers get state funds in MN?

For sure, and I donβt mean to dunk on you. This is just something Iβve been thinking about as a buildings person who works on energy and climate. And my set of tools just doesnβt work on this challenge. Yea, its great that data center might be more efficient in its HVAC or whatever but (cont)

there is no way that efficiency and green building certifications do much to help the climate impact of a 100MW data center. It just doesnβt math.

Iβm an energy efficiency and buildings person, it is literally my job & area of expertise. But we arenβt going to efficiency or green building certify our way out of the data center problem. The data centers need to run on clean electricity + become grid assets by becoming sources of flexible load.
