"Literature of Unsettlement" public lecture, Columbia University by Visiting Professor Maha El Hissy Empty Lecture Hall talk held at Columbia University. The visiting professor cancelled her lecture after the abduction and arrest of the Palestinian Columbia graduate student Mahmoud Khalil by ICE/DHS agenst, and over Columbia's failure to offer any protection for its students. "Literature of Unsettlement" focuses on Palestinian writing straightforwardly imagining undoing settlement: telling stories and memories of those who are indigenous to the land, imagining pre-colonial times, the villages before settlement, the language and names once spoken there, unsettling or revoking the colonial establishment’s archives and narratives. Disclaimer: at the time of recording, Mahmoud Khalil was held in prison. He was released on bail after more than three months in detention.

The talk is now an “empty lecture hall public lecture” which describes the absurdity and current state of affairs when talking about Palestine.

Before leaving the United States, I recorded my lecture titled “Literature of Unsettlement” in Hind’s Hall which students occupied during their encampment of 2024. I refuse to contribute to any erasure of Palestinian archives which the talk was to focus on anyway.

Last week, Columbia has officially implemented the IHRA definition of antisemitism, thus prohibiting any critique of the state of Israel nor its genoc*dal war conduct in G*za.

As the Max Kade Visiting Professor at Columbia, I was due to give a public lecture during Spring Term that I had to cancel after the abduction and arrest of Mahmoud Khalil by ICE/DHS agents and Columbia’s failure to offer any protection for its students.

I cancelled my attendance in a big German Studies conference this week in light of the lack of meaningful opposition to Germany's role in the destruction of Gaza across the discipline, including its proudly progressive associations/groups (@ddgc.bsky.social being the only exception I know of)
