RIP, ChatGPT.
26.01.2025 21:47 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0TBH, it is so annoying to have a character limit for posts. I wanted to post something here but it was just too tedious to break long posts into threads or keep everything within 300 characters.
05.01.2025 20:53 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Applications for our GenAI faculty position in the CSE department at UCSC close on Friday. Come and join our amazing team in Silicon Valley
> recruit.ucsc.edu/JPF01825
Ensure your applications are submitted by Friday as they will be reviewed over the Holiday Break!
Tenure is nothing if it hinders chasing dreams and staying true to my values. I believe tenure is just a byproduct of doing meaningful work, not the end goal of a faculty career.
16.12.2024 18:40 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Many asked me: "Why take a leave to do startup before tenure?" "Why speak up and challenge senior voices?" "Have you got tenure yet?"
My response:
Thank you Ian!
12.12.2024 01:34 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Good morning Vancouver!
10.12.2024 16:02 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I am attending #NeurIPS2024 in Vancouver for the whole week. Would love to connect and chat about:
- Research in multimodal LLMs, GenAI, Agents, etc.
- AI PhD opportunities at UCSB;
- Faculty openings at UCSC;
- Research & products at Simular.
DM open!
If someone wonder why a busy faculty is quite active on social media, let me tell you: checking emails, slack, and social media etc. is one of the few things you can do while babysitting. π
08.12.2024 19:47 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Finally, a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who has supported me on this journeyβmy family, mentors, students, collaborators, colleagues, and friends. It means the world to me! π
08.12.2024 18:09 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Meanwhile, Iβm continuing to build Simular AI as Head of Research! π Simular is the most promising agent startup that automates computer workflows at all levels.
Check out our latest products and innovations: simular.ai. Let's change the world together!
I am sad to leave UCSC, a dream school with amazing faculty and a stunning location rivaled only by Stanford and Berkeley. Grateful for the tremendous support, and I will continue collaborating with my colleagues here.
BTW, UCSC is hiring new faculty in GenAI: recruit.ucsc.edu/JPF01825
This was a tough decision, but UCSB means a lot to me. In 2015, I came to the US for the first time and spent 5 unforgettable years in SBβresearch, marriage, and childbirth. It will be exactly 10 years when I return!
For PhD applicants: come study at a world-class department in a dream location:
Yeah, same! Conferences are more and more like places for networking than learning new knowledge... workshops are still great for new stuffs though
08.12.2024 18:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The evolution of academic posts on social media:
- Papers: First posted when accepted β then when arXiv-ed β now before arXiv submission.
- Jobs: First posted when starting a new job β then when accepting an offer β now when starting the job hunt.
Life update: Excited to announce that Iβll be joining UCSB CS (@ucsb-cs.bsky.social) as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2025βwhere my research dream began!
If youβre interested in PhD research (3+ openings) on multimodal, GenAI, or agents (embodied/digital), apply to UCSB CS by Dec 15!
For my ICLR submissions, it is either one paper with follow-up comments from multiple reviewers, or no comments from any reviewers, quite mixed feeling.
25.11.2024 03:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Treat people the way you want to be treated.
24.11.2024 03:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Cool! Vision and Language researcher here!

Here we go! Looking forward to it next month!
22.11.2024 08:16 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Cool. Embodied AI researcher here.
22.11.2024 03:16 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Cool. Would love to join.
22.11.2024 01:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That I agree. But I also miss hanging out with other students without the faculty hat. I guess I miss being young.
21.11.2024 18:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Dear #ICLR reviewers, you are encouraged to be open-minded, acknowledge misunderstandings when they arise, actively engage in discussions, and donβt hesitate to ask follow-up clarification questions.
Your thoughtful efforts are invaluable to both ACs and authors. Thank you!
TBH, I miss attending academic conferences as a student. So much more fun!
21.11.2024 04:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Funny how I feel more expressive on Sky Blue than on Twitter.
21.11.2024 04:21 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Sometimes, there is indeed a balance between fancy ideas and what really works. As researchers, we must avoid optimizing solely for paper acceptance or incremental performance gainsβtrue progress lies in meaningful contributions that matter.
