I genuinely have no idea how to convey this to the American people, but I think the biggest impediment to any kind of immigration reform is that people are convinced that "legal" and "illegal" are immutable, intrinsic categories instead of a rapidly-shifting arbitrary constellation of regulations.

To add to this, one of my students who uses a wheelchair simply could not get to class last week because of the unshoveled sidewalks. They tried for over an hour and had to turn around and get home because their wheels spun in the snow and they couldn't get to crosswalks. Really awful.

Unmarked car, no lights or police insignia. Masked armed men leap out. Victim not in the act of committing any crime. This is not how a serious federal law enforcement agency acts in a free society.

What we found is bleak. Attorneys told us theyβre struggling to get information in to or out of ICE and Customs and Border Protection facilities, which are holding nearly 69,000 people this month. And detainees often are forced to choose between remaining in crowded, squalid conditions or leaving the country immediately.
Judges in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles have ordered the government to facilitate attorney-client communications at Homeland Security buildings. But attorneys say that doesnβt always happen. Even if detainees get the option, some worry theyβll be punished if they take it.
Lawyers can't reach clients in ICE detention. I've heard it anecdotally, but scale of issue is horrifying.

Ultimately, Petitioners may, because of the arcane United States immigration system, return to
their home country, involuntarily or by self-deportation. But that result should occur through a more
orderly and humane policy than currently in place.

We're told that power wealth & fame are the ultimate aphrodisiacs. But the Epstein files show they also stunt emotional maturity and infantilize the men who possess them.
And it's no coincidence these men took to victimizing girls at a time when women became their co-equals in other spheres.

The Franks were literally defying the law by hiding from the authorities rather than going to the camps. The people who turned them over to the Nazis were following the law.
A common Nazi accusation was that Jews were sex offenders and Nazis portrayed the holocaust as self-defence.

Tweet from Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun: "Ignorance like this cheapens the horror of the Holocaust. Anne Frank was in Amsterdam legally and abided by Dutch law. She was hauled off to a death camp because of her race and religion. Her story has nothing to do with the illegal immigration, fraud, and lawlessness plaguing Minnesota today.
Our brave law enforcement should be commended, not tarred with this historically illiterate and antisemitic comparison."
To avoid the possibility Holocaust remembrance might lead to empathy for migrants, Trump's antisemitism envoy claims Anne Frank "was in Amsterdam legally."
In reality, Margot Frank received a summons to go to a labor camp on July 5, 1942. After ignoring this call, they were in Amsterdam illegally.

Imagine a paramilitary gang kills 2 observers over 2 weeks, then shows up at your home to say, "You, observer, we know where you live."
That's a death threat.
If it happened to me or a colleague when I was a human rights observer in N. Ireland, we would've lodged complaints with three govts.
