Legends: I'd appreciate any and all signal boosts on this. I've been out of comics a solid while and Event Horizon is a return I wasn't expecting that I'm having an absolute blast on! Today is the last day for shops to get their orders in. If you want a copy, you need to let them know right now.

Happy birthday to the prophetess Octavia Butler. We live in the times she foretold. From her notebooks.

The Stories of Tobias Wolff (Bloomsbury, 1997). The cover shows a photo by Vincent McDonald of a sad-looking dog with its face up close and body distortedly small as a result, against an artificially coloured background of beach and orange-yellow cloudy sky. And it’s even worse to look at than that description implies.

Hello, I’d like to introduce you to the book with the greatest gulf between quality of contents and quality of cover.

Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated last night, was the Speaker of the Minnesota House in the 2023-2024 session, when Democrats ran the state government.

That means she had a leading role in shepherding the many landmark reforms that Dems adopted in that period—an important legacy. Brief 🧵.

Image of Athena’s Owl, orange on black.

On a colonial planet isolated in deep space, archaeologist Brynn Silva discovers a rusted claw in the desert. The moment is a sea change for the colonists of Shanidar. Although abandoned cities abound on the planet, no alien remains have ever been discovered. No tombs. No cemeteries. No artifacts of death. Only the ruins and artwork of a vanished society. Until now. Here, reaching through a wound in the sand, is one of the Owl Men. As Brynn, a xenolinguist rival, and a cult of zealots called The Resurrectionists strive to understand the past and future of Shanidar, a mysterious stranger appears on the horizon, taking the colonists in directions no one can predict.

Is the wanderer a survivor of a prior expedition, as he claims? Is he one of the beings that inhabited Shanidar in the distant past? Or is he, as the Resurrectionists come to believe, a messiah from the stars? On Shanidar, horror is in the eye of the beholder.

Society would have you believe that a beautiful life can only be bought in the form of luxury condos, self-driving cars, and smartphones with AI assistants, but in truth a beautiful life lies everywhere in the streets, awaiting anyone with the courage to live it, free for all.

I had no ideas he adlibbed that line, I can still remember being in the theatre and kind of realizing the whole Freddy persona was finally taking shape.

it is absolutely true that lincoln tried not to get too far afield of public opinion on slavery, calibrating his positions and actions according to what he thought was the mainstream. but it is important to note that at no point did lincoln ever disavow or deny his *sincerely held antislavery views*

All My Babies | Negro Midwives in Albany, GA (1953)
YouTube video by Reelblack One All My Babies | Negro Midwives in Albany, GA (1953)

Recorded on location in Albany, GA in 1952, it shows preparation for and home delivery of healthy babies in both relatively good and bad rural conditions among African American families at that time.

It is a profound portrait of Miss Mary & record of the actual living conditions of her patients.
