3/4 From 2027 Drax will only operate when required – not being used instead of renewable energy. This will save money and reduce the UK’s contribution to climate change. And, if they make windfall profits, they will be taxed.

2/4 It follows years of campaigning by @serauk members, including many of our 100-plus members in Parliament. Since 2012 Conservative-led governments gave £6bn in public subsidies to Drax whilst turning a blind eye to the environmental damage caused by the plant.

John Prescott was a politician both behind and ahead of his time. Considered too bluff and old Labour to reach to the very top in the 90s, today his authenticity and class credentials would have been perfect to fight Farage and populism. Labour needs more like him.

We are deeply sorry to hear of John Prescott’s death. An environmental champion, he played a critical role in securing the Kyoto Protocol that underpins the global fight to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to try to avoid catastrophic climate change. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
