Very good, Bram! It was indeed 20.05.2006. That was the biggest summetime tornado outbreak since at least 2000 for Central Europa, with 16 confirmed tornadoes in the ESWD. Graphic shows wind and tornado reports of that day.

Looks like 20 May 2006. I actually didn't know much about this event, except that there was a tornado outbreak somewhere in May 2006. And since the map shows the Emden radar, it had to be before Spring 2018, so I decided to check the KM archive for this option that came to my mind. Tors + svr wind

Now the #tornado stripes seperated into strength. The second graphic shows weak (IF0 - IF1.5) vs. strong (IF2+) tornadoes. There is a disproportionately high maximum of strong tornadoes in the first 10 years compared to weak tornadoes. The average was 9 compared to 3 in the 10 years that followed.

OTD in 1897 the worst known Apulia tornado left a 40 km long path of devastation, impacting especially the towns of Sava and Oria. Homes were leveled while others got their furniture sucked out of windows, grass and dirt were scoured and olive trees were debarked

🟢 Am 03.09.2025 zog ein #Tornado durch #Mussum (#Bocholt, #NRW): Entlang der 1,7 km langen Schneise kam es zunächst nur zu punktuellen Vegetationsschäden, bevor am Ende Dächer teilweise abgedeckt, Autos beschädigt und Gärten verwüstet wurden.

OTD an outbreak of 7 tornadoes struck the Po Valley, four of them can be rated as IF2.5. Despite towns and villages being directly struck, as well as close calls at the Fossoli di Carpi airfield, incredibly nobody was injured

🟢 Heute vor zwei Monaten: Am 14.07.2025 zog ein schwacher #Tornado über den Süden der #Rheininsel #Niederwerth bei #Koblenz (#RLP). Entlang der etwa 340 Meter langen Schneise beschädigte der kurzlebige Tornado einige Bäume.

🟢 Am 28.05.2025 kam es bei #Biebergemünd (#Hessen) zu einem IF1-#Tornado. Entlang einer über 2 Kilometer langen Schneise kam es zu Schäden. Im Ortsteil #Bieber wurden Dächer beschädigt und Bäume entwurzelt. Eine Anwohnerin filmte den Tornado.

Despite peak storm season and upcoming changes in my life, Italy's historical tornadoes are still being worked on. Lately I helped @essl-ecss.bsky.social staff in analyzing some of our major tornadoes and so far this is the biggest result: July 4th 1965 now has three IF3s and one F4

Horsham had the UK's heaviest ever hailstone fall back on this date in 1958, which weighed 190 grams - the same supercell also dropped a T4+ rated tornado that tracked over 24 miles although the hailstorm lasted for over 90 miles.

OTD in 2015, Campania region’s record hailstorm. In the morning a supercell impacted the Naples metropolitan area bringing hailstones up to an estimated 12 cm in diameter, which caused damage and at least two injuries

I think the low CC is due to non-uniform beam filling (e.g. a mixture of rain and hail, or large and small drops). This signature extends down-radial beyond the part of the storm where the non-uniform beam filling occurs.

Far from being the most spectacular Aurora of Solar Cycle 25, September 2nd's event had its moments. However, the true showstopper was a tiny thunderstorm. Bonus: even a bit of airglow made an appearance.
