For my part I need to remember that being disabled doesn’t always mean you can never do a thing, merely that doing a thing may be possible given necessary assistance/support but you don’t currently have access to that. Which is why I’m not an astronaut as of this moment

Told my mom it was cool and all, and through no direct fault of hers, but how for a confluence of reasons I spent almost all of my first thirty or so years on the planet in a state of burnout, fight or flight, and not ever feeling like I had a safe space and only learned how to relax as an adult.

Anyway i forget how this joke goes but the punchline is intergenerational undiagnosed autism and cycles of emotional abuse set against the rugged backdrop of postwar Europe and Asia

Like the message growing up was just don’t ever be disabled or need extra help and if you are just make sure no one ever finds out. Being different or drawing attention to self was somehow worst crime imaginable, one which brought shame to fam. To him I just flew a freak flag, which… maybe I did.

When my father disciplined me for ever using language about myself that suggested difference, like weird, slower, shy, sad, abnormal, dysfunctional, I couldn’t help but strongly internalize the message. But i questioned what the nature of the offense was, was it being odd or just admitting to it?

A lot of indoctrination from dad and stoic pride and toxic bullshit about never admitting emotion,weakness or divergence or to needing extra support, kept me from self identifying as disabled a lot longer than i should’ve. I Could still reflexively feel admonishment from *long dead father when said.

Told my mom how young me viewed mental illness / disability as something that needed to be conquered/ overcome or else ignored because to display it publicly or be impeded by it was unbecoming and it was your duty to succeed despite it so just suck it up, and how current me is like fuuuuuck that
