I got much better when I started embracing inspiration from peers, rather than competition.

I think imitating or chasing heroes when you’re learning is very normal and helpful. I just think we all need to recognize a point where we stop striving for somebody else’s aesthetic or even their career and recognize that we all have things to offer.

The fact that this creature is still publicly using the word “children”…blows the mind.

I hope you got to a point though where you realized they draw one way and you draw one way, and both are great, and we’re all just getting the ideas out of our heads, however they come out.

Disagree slightly with the “don’t show it” part (I say show that shit!), but yeah. There’s nothing really useful in comparison or competition. It’s not sports. Find inspiration, apply, create, repeat.

But all these things are tools, and telling a whole industry it should take a tool out of the toolbox or it isn’t cool anymore is flawed thinking.

For me, overuse as obligatory use. Neither is constructive. Overusing thought balloons is no worse than overusing dialogue or 1st person captions. I read plenty of comics that are too wordy and it messes them up. Similarly, I don’t expect writers to use thought balloons is they don’t want to.

Thought balloons are a language. Specific to comic books and pretty much anybody, anywhere in the world knows what the shape means. I hate that one or two writers came along 25 years ago and deemed them “uncool” and we all just obeyed. Same thing with third person narration.
