What a terrible day to know how to read

So many vulnerable people were hurt, harassed and raped by these ghouls and nowβ€”I’m worriedβ€”it’s gonna become hehe haha lurid internet circus instead of a long overdue moral reckoning. I’m scared of who we all are becoming. That man has brought us ALL low.

I’m glad that the Nazi tattoo is a line for people but just to be clear, β€œIt’s women’s fault if they get raped” should have been.

My (British) girlfriend finding out I’m not old enough to be president yet, with absolute outrage: β€œBut there’s no upper age limit?!”

Tell me what other part I need to play, Prime Minister.

Immigrants are…

a) almost uniformly not allowed access to public funds;
b) charged doubly for using the NHS (immigration surcharge and tax);
c) and required to make more than Β£41k and pay upwards of Β£10k/pp by the time they’re granted ILR.

What part of that is not earning their right?

If Labour cannot denounce mass deportation of permanent residents, Idi Amin style, what is the point of them?

Lazy freeloading international students, though, am I right?

This is so obviously true.

It’s also – not for nothing – bonkers stupid as a policy. The reason the data shows so many foreign grads don’t transition to employment visas β€œas intended” is because Labour has made it even more difficult – and even more EXPENSIVE!!!! – to sponsor workers.

Is there a reason I ask that the Times are using a picture of asylum seekers in a boat to describe rules for migrants who came on legal routes such as skilled worker visas for doctors?

Lots of men really think that being punished or even embarrassed for sexually exploiting teenage girls is a great injustice, and that actually sexually exploiting them is somewhere on the spectrum between β€œokay” and β€œpretty cool.”

Good heads up especially for media: do not take a bunch if correlations by motivated actors seriously. If they don’t preregister their hypotheses and data, chances are the results are spurious and cherry picked

Dismayed by the "I loathe Gl**ner but his arrest should scare us all" takes. The bar for arrest over a social media post *should be extremely high*, but a guy who's harassed trans people 19 hours a day for 8 years, telling his 600k fans to attack any trans women they see, clears that barΒ vΒ easily?

This line in particular feels like it speaks to a lot of the current reporting on the government's adoption of "AI" in the UK

How journalists can hold algorithms accountable in India – and beyond Journalist Karen Rebelo from India unpacks tech accountability in India.

This @reutersinstitute.bsky.social piece about how new algorithm-driven tools are degrading the welfare system in India – as well as the original reporting it rounds up – should be required reading for anyone covering government, policy or tech.

Maybe the definition of "a reasonable member of the public" has changed.

Or maybe, just maybe, they thought no one would care. And even if someone did care (I care!), guess what?) Maybe they also knew that it didn't matter because – ultimately – the Lords don't have to answer to the British public.

Here's how the Code of Conduct defines "relevant"

13.08.2025 12:33 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

So I guess what I want to know is this: What changed in April that made those non-financial interests that were *always* relevant no longer so?

But before this change, the Code of Conduct already drew a distinction between non-financial interests that were relevant and declarable and those that weren't. Here's what the rules said before they were changed.
