Brum campaigner says β€˜city-wide’ 20mph limit would be 'common sense' The prospect of Birmingham having a 'city-wide' 20mph speed limit has been met with both praise and anger in recent days

Our co-chair, Mat MacDonald, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that there are β€œreams of evidence” to show that a 20mph speed limit saves lives and prevents catastrophic injuries’’:

John O'Dowd: 'Expect congestion' if you drive into Belfast DfI says Belfast traffic chaos could be cut by walking, cycling, using public transport or working at home.

Unexpected candour:

"...there are too many cars and too limited a space, so therefore each of us have to make a decision in terms of how we deal with that. If you do travel into Belfast city centre, using a car, you should expect congestion, and that leads to congestion for other people as well."

As Birmingham City Council's call to DfT to be allowed to set a default 20mph signed at the city boundaries gets media attention, we are pleased to see our position being featured. "Setting 20mph as a survivable default urban/village limit and excepting up" is becoming recognised as best practice.

Not sure that I trust Richard Parker or Birmingham Council to step up sufficiently

It’s been over 50 years since my political hero, Barbara Castle, set out her vision for integrated transport in the 1968 Transport Act.

At its core was never a battle of car against train, or bus against tram – but a vision of a coherent transport network that gave people real choice.

A system in local hands, run by local leaders, and which met the needs of local people.

And a system that, in her words, was integral to all other planning – economy, housing, environment – you name it, transport enabled it.

Louise Haigh's speech is now online: www.gov.uk/government/s...

Very welcome to hear a secretary of state with this level of ambition to shape the transport system to work better for people. Exciting to see how this develops over the coming months.

Haigh is spot on with this bit.

@richardparkerwm.bsky.social needs to look at this too. He's had 6 months in the job and I've seen very little positive from him so far
