Thanks to @tenebrouspress.bsky.social, I got to read @hazelzorn.bsky.social Hazel Zorn's Reef Mind. It's aquatic eco-horror, something like Annihilation meets The Last of Us via The Little Mermaid. Unique, surreal, and compelling.

Godammit. I was browsing Bluesky this morning and recalled a film I hadn't seen in a while. Thought, "I should look that up on Hoopla when I'm at my computer" and now that I am at my computer, I CANNOT REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS.
I can still tell you how to find the level-skip warp pipes in SMB, though.

Out now: THE SIEGE OF BURNING GRASS by @premeemohamed.com!

A stunningly prescient meditation on war, nationalism, and courage.

The most difficult thing about writing The AI Con was arguably the constraint that we couldn't put numbered endnotes in. The endnotes are there -- 59 pages of them! -- but you have to know to go and look.

Are you going to SPIEL Essen? I can #translate your flyers, brochures and other marketing material into #German. I can even translate rulebooks or whole games, so you can have a German prototype on your stand.

Finished reading Uketsu's STRANGE PICTURES. Haunting, the best parts of all the J-horror stuff I like, moves along at a good pace.

Yes! And it's not like this is some kind of "road to greatness" even. Just overcompetitive parents.

When my kid was about 4, he entered a local balance bike race for preschoolers. It was the first and last time the city did it. Folks from all over western Japan came, kids in with custom bikes and parents shouting at every mistake. "Tighten up on the corners!"
At preschoolers. On balance bikes.

Busy day, but it’s still #FridayReads time! Let’s boost all signals. Repost this and let us know what to repost for you. I’m sharing the perfect summer read: a hurricane, the ocean, things from beyond the reef, magic, friends, and maybe a bit of violence.

People routinely justify their use of AI because they think they use it responsibly, for good purposes. But there is no good purpose for a dehumanization machine. As you use it, it rots your soul and steals your humanity. This guy gets it, he knows what AI is really for.

Hell YES.
Some changes to the book, but all seemed to work (except one tiny thing that could have made the story solid diamond, but I'm a nitpicker, so...).
Shiraishi fans will LOVE this one.
It only just barely strays into "too much closure" territory, but that closure is so wild, it's OK.

Help me find the name for this cognitive bias, because I am sure there are studies on it: when someone of a majority group asks a question / says something to a minority person thinking they are the only one, but simply because majority>minority, the minority person hears it 100 times a days

it is no exaggeration to say that Hersey’s Hiroshima is one of the most affecting, devastating pieces of reporting in the last century. I don’t see how you can read it and not come away with the soul-deep belief that every nuke should be fully dismantled and the blueprints obliterated.

Multiple pink cats heads float below a manhole cover from a sewer. The manhole cover is sprouting ostrich feathers. The feathers all have a flouting eye in them. This is my weirdest book and the image is a great illustration of that weirdness.

My publisher released four of my novels with new gorgeous covers by the great Yuko Shimizu.

They’re calling it the LaValle Quartet though each book stands alone.

Just look at these things!

They’re in bookstores now.

If I have to explain to you why it's a bad idea to use a machine that makes shit up 15-80% of the time AND destroys the environment AND contributes to rising fascism and genocide AND puts brilliant skillful creatives out of work by stealing their work, then we're already speaking different languages

Apparently someone at Prosieben TV in Germany found out about Yamaguchi udon chain Dondon and came to report on it. It's good stuff, but the real claim to fame is the noodles often beat you to your seat after ordering.
