A rufous-tailed hummingbird is captured hovering in isolation against a neutral background, its green iridescence glowing, complimented by its bright orange beak and of course, its rufous tail.

About an hour’s drive from Bogotá is another family run slice of bird heaven - Jardin Ecantado. I’ve never seen so many beautiful hummingbirds in one place - including this Rufous-tailed Hummingbird.

My second day out of Bogota started out more local, with a visit to Parque La Florida, a wetland not too far from the airport and my guide Juan Carlos (thank you!) dragged me out early enough to see the Bogota Rail.

A Siver-throated Spintail peaks out from the green brush, it’s long tail a little hidden, but the sun lighting up its rusty cap and silver throat.

A little further down in elevation we worked hard to get a glimpse of the Silvery-throated Spinetail. Another Colombian endemic with a crazy restricted range.

Great shot.

One highlight was this Boyaca Antpitta. Maybe not the most dramatic and colourful bird, but so unique looking to my North American eye, and its restricted range kind of boggled the mind.

I was sad to leave Cali, but of course new Colombia bird adventures lay ahead, with my next base of operations being Bogota. Day 1, was a trip up to the paramo habitat of Sumapaz N.P. My guide, Juan Carlos Rubiano Reyes, did an amazing job of leading me up into the high Andean elevation.
