On AI & water usage, it looks like all US data center usage (not just AI) ranges from 628M gallons a day (counting evaporation from dam reservoirs used for hydro-power) to 200-275M with power but not dam evaporation, to 50M for cooling alone.
So not nothing, but also a lot less than golf courses.

The US Administration has mounted an unprecedented and unpopular attack on high skill immigration.
It’s working. The world’s best and brightest are starting to understand that the US government considers them an infection.

Every time someone makes me read something Peter Thiel said it’s like “Scrooge McDuck is Jesus Christ and Huey, Dewey, and Louie are Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel and Daisy is Mary Magdalene and that’s why women voting has lowered American sperm count.”

Um pássaro preto elegante com uma listra branca na asa, olhos amarelos marcantes e bico fino, pousado delicadamente em um galho seco com resquícios de flores murchas, tudo emoldurado por um fundo verde suave e desfocado.

I can't even explain why I like @leaflet.pub so much but I really do, and now it's open source (on an open source open sourcing tool) and man that is cool

To the extent they do engage in politics, it's almost always this weird kind of establishment center-left *anti-politics*, all about everyone being more moderate and calm and reasonable and bipartisan and not *fighting* so much. They seem genuinely averse to serious political conflict.

the reactionary center divides pretty cleanly into folks who are genuinely smart with independent accomplishments (Pinker, McWhorter) and total, obvious hacks (Weiss, TCW), and the fact that the former tolerate the latter makes me doubt their intellectual sincerity

In Firefox you can press "ctrl+shift+s" to open an in-browser screenshot taker. Since it's integrated into the browser it's got some features the OS screenshotter doesn't, like "adjust region" and DOM selector

📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.
Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.

years ago, “data scientist” was a PhD-only position at Big Tech, or just an analyst anywhere else
i think the term is now just the latter, and the former is now split between “ML engineer” & “AI researcher”
also, “AI engineer” has emerged and it’s not the same as “ML engineer”, not at all

This is a great discussion. What it makes clear to me is that Ezra Klein is lost right now in a way that TNC isn't, and I don't mean that as a dunk.
