Polar stereographic map of sea surface temperature trends for Septembers from 1979 to 2024. Red shading is shown for warming trends, and blue shading is shown for cooling trends. All areas of the ocean are observing warming.
Sea surface temperatures are warming across the entire periphery of the #Arctic Ocean in September.
This is especially observed in areas with long-term declines in sea ice concentration, such around the Chukchi and Kara Seas.

Ridgeline chart showing the distribution of global daily air temperature differences from the pre-industrial reference period (1850-1900), for every year between 1940 and 2024. Each individual year resembles a hill, shaded in a darker shade of red and further to the right for warmer years. The trend is clearly towards warmer years, with 2024 standing out as first year above 1.5C.
NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.
We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.
2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

With the Palisade, Eaton, and Hurst fires still burning and 0% containment, the amount of devastation is increasing by the minute. A disaster that is no doubt a result of a warming climate, decreasing rainfall, and a longer fire season. βοΈ

Great article, btw! So weβre looking at a decadal scale of continued warming after achieving net zero assuming this model accurately predicts reality? Certainly a much better outcome than a couple hundred years.

Interesting, and thank you for sharing. So this suggests if we achieved net zero tomorrow, then warming trends stop the same day, and equalize until sinks begin to slowly reduce some of the warming? What about other GHGβs? This model only considers CO2.
11.12.2024 16:54 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0
Yes equilibrium will be achieved but not immediately. The feedback doesnβt occur instantly because of the varying residence times for GHGβs.

A trend that is guaranteed to continue. Even if we halted all emissions now, the residence time of green house gasses would still deliver climbing global temperatures for decades to come.
