End of rant. It's sad, I guess, to say all these things. I suppose I'm just screaming into the void but it really do be like that.

I'm into Warhammer now and that's scratching the itch. I get to learn new rules and have a fun game to play with my friends. Which is really all I wanted anyway.

The game has just run much further and faster than I could ever hope to keep up with. It's easy to let it go because, realistically, it's not the game that I grew up playing anymore. And not even just because of UB (which is a toilet) but because the game is just too complex to enjoy anymore.

I had to either shell out hefty dollars to make my decks able to compete or just be ready to lose. A lot. The game just lost the kitchen table magic (heh). You'd tune some 60-cards for an FNM coming up and then get all your bulk rares and some good pack cracks and make an EDH deck for the weekends.

And if you do find a card you like, well guess what? There are 500 PERFECTLY OPTIMIZED builds for the deck on EDHRec, so you don't even have to think about how you want the deck to be constructed. My playgroup, when they got into the game, all just went there and their decks RAPIDLY outclassed mine

Gone are the days where you'd get a new set/block and then have to cobble together your EDH deck to work around the stupid theme you made up for it. Now, every card that is printed is designed with that format in mind and serves to be a PERFECT setup to any archetype. There is no more creativity.

How do you, as a high school kid, keep up with the release schedule? If you wanted to play Standard, which we did back in the day, how are you affording a deck sans sponsorship? And don't worry, I know that EDH is now the ONLY format that matters but even THAT sucks to play.

But holy shit. I feel like unless you're actively making money off the game (streaming and content creators, I guess) there's just not a lot to like anymore. Sets are coming at a breakneck pace and even if you actually like all of them (I, personally, do not) there's just TOO MUCH shit, man

I was so into it and loved all the rules and shit. Even wanted to become a judge but never got around to really figuring out how layers worked (lol). As a caveat, if you love this game, more power to you. It's a great fuckin' game. Slinging cardboard is still an almost undefeatable feeling.

Just some clarifying thoughts that I wanted to add to this as I've gone throughout my day. Don't get the original post twisted: I LOVED this fucking game. I dedicated most of my high school and college years and significant amounts of my adult life to it. It was THE game that I played.

Honestly, I thought it'd be harder never to buy a Magic: the Gathering product ever again but, honestly, it's just the easiest decision I've ever had to make. Haven't bought anything since (I think) LotR and I'm not looking back now.

Saw that image of the "future partnerships" or whatever and my heart skipped a beat before remembering that Strixhaven exists lol
