deepens my appreciation for Borges' Aleph. not only because of the incredible conceit at its core, which we all love science fiction et al for, but because its couched in incredibly human terms narratively.

one of my favorite working definitions of style is "whatever you can pull off convincingly" and maybe that's the crux. at this point, what does reilly have to prove to anyone. comedy, drama, musicals? earned the right to be any type of guy he wants to be now. even a hat guy.

imo you earn the right at a certain age and station and body weight. it makes you look friendly and approachable and gently rumpled, like a careworn teddy bear. who yes is also drunk on a riverboat.

can you imagine how nice it must be to take your hat off and fan yourself with it at any time

You do not have to reflexively surrender your brain and political imagination to a bunch of fascist rich guys who've spent the last decade getting neck deep into extreme fringe delusions about machine gods! You really don't!

a generation that patiently told their parent no, your computer is not infected with a virus because a flashing pop-under declared it, somehow find themselves completely enthralled to /besotted by / fearful of a customer service chatbot with a very odd penchant for roleplaying. why do people do this

when people fan and daub their brow with a handkerchief because the ai went into spicy pattern matching mode it feels like watching a kid get their world rocked playing with a magic eight ball for the first time. and then you realize most people could still assign great meaning to just that.

i understand gassing up ai’s power and credibility is big business, which accounts for the giant distortion field around it. but this kind of shock and hand wringing about the wacky stuff stuff bots say belies a completely unearned credulity and authority assigned to this tech. this is still ELIZA.

i have been reading borges again and the house of asterion, a story i think i read many years ago but now immediately shocked me as very obviously inspiring a good deal of susanna clarke’s exquisite novel piranesi in the best way. there are derivations but i think the truest inspiration is a seed

yes. he was a true believer / completely shameless military hardware otaku. not sure how you get into submarines otherwise. the belief element though, i think is really hard to maintain in the present era. in a cynical age of self there’d have to be something bigger than the self to believe.
