I'm a big fan of people, history, cities, bicycles, transit, and giving a damn. City Councilmember in Springville, Utah (he/him)

I'm glad to be featured by UTA, sharing some of the joy of transit and how important it has been for connecting our community and getting more capacity out of our roadways.

Look mom, I'm on TV!
07.08.2025 14:42 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0What is the death penalty, really? The death penalty is state violence distilled into its purest essence: methodical, godlike power over life & death, animated by belief in the necessity of deliberate cruelty, sustained by faith that sacrifice purifies the social order & makes us safe.
06.08.2025 14:31 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0We're going to need a better view of those socks too.
06.08.2025 23:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0An underwater photo of a bed of mussels, with a speech bubble drawn over them to make it appear as if they are the ones speaking the post above, saying "filter filter filter filter." (Hopefully it's not obnoxious, I'm just trying to add some whimsy to what I assume is a frustration)
06.08.2025 22:53 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A photo looking down a wetland boardwalk in Provo's Bicentennial Park. Tall reeds and grasses grow green on either side. Mature trees enclose the scene and a mountain peak can be seen in the distance over the tree tops. Despite being in the middle of an urban area this scene is a pocket of wild, natural space.
Just had a great meeting with a habitat biologist and an ecologist about how to preserve and create more natural spaces in and around Springville.
So much low hanging fruit and also some exciting long-term opportunities. I'm feeling hyped.
The two leading causes of death for children in the U.S. are cars and guns, by far.
It should probably be a bigger story that Republicans are actively pushing policies that make both of these problems worse.
This is it. Freeze it in amber. Hang it in a museum. The ultimate expression of the NYT and the elite class behind it.
The utter moral failure of ceding power to Trump? Acceptable ... if it is done in a clever, savvy way!
Blutah is coming!

05.08.2025 04:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Specifically, the through-street is a two-lane road. The outer two 'lanes' are parking but got treated as de facto turning lanes. My neighbors all know that, but car-brained chuds on the internet think the diagram shows a four-lane road being bottlenecked down to two lanes.
05.08.2025 00:08 β π 11 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Screenshot of results for a Google image search for the term "bulb-outs". Fifth or sixth, which I've circled, is my hand-drawn diagram showing how bulb-outs at intersection corners shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians while forcing speeding drivers to slow down, especially when making turns.
In 2022, after a girl was killed in a crosswalk on her way to school, I quickly drew this diagram to share with my neighbors. It is now one of the top image results if you google "bulb-outs."
I would have embedded more context if I had known the image was going to be passed around for years.
I love that mug! And the perfect size too.

Helping write the obituary for my brother in 2019 and my sister in 2021 was wrenching & emotional. It's impossible to summarize a life and a personality in mere paragraphs. To attempt it is an honorβand cathartic.
I cannot fathom giving that privilege away to anyone, let alone a plagiarism machine!
pair of childβs drawings of animals. one is of a brown dog and reads βiβm a dog and i like it!β the second reads βitβs ok to be stinky sometimesβ and features a black bear with stink lines and flies surrounding him.

01.08.2025 05:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I think it's strongly linked to the fact that most media leaders and their writers are still very much swimming in Twitter/X and it's cooking their brains. Despite the Twitter diaspora, they remain on X and it is still defining their Overton window.
31.07.2025 05:51 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I was hopeful UDOT would be fair and serious with this situation foisted on them by the legislature, and SB195 might in some ways even strengthen the safe streets movement.
But the design of this survey has pretty much cured me of that hope.
I gotta spend some time figuring out how to tune my feeds so I see my friends' posts more often. Either I miss all your posts or I click over to your profile and spam every one of your posts with interactions all at once, which seems like bad form.
31.07.2025 05:02 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If you care about safe streets in Utah then you need to take this UDOT survey.
31.07.2025 04:58 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I want to watch the Tour de France, but I think next year I need a guide/interpreter because I have no idea what's going on or what the numbers on the screen mean.
Are there places on the Wasatch Front where people get together to watch it?
"...And we accomplish this by stealing months of hard work from other writers and regurgitating it. So you can rest assured any pieces that are clever or interesting come from actual human artists, in a roundabout way."
27.07.2025 19:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0βI think [the bicycle] has done more to emancipate women than any one thing in the world. I rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a bike. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat, and away she goes, the picture of untrammelled womanhood.β
I don't think that's something to be embarrassed about. My wife didn't learn until her mid-20s. My own mother didn't really learn til she was 50+. It's never too late and there are people who will be happy to teach you :)
Susan B Anthony didn't learn until later in life and said this of bicycling:
