Dear black American fam, what are traditions you practice for Kwanzaa? I’m wanting to incorporate it into my festivities this year (s/o to the Carmicheal family for teaching us about Kwanzaa in the 2000s

When i meet people who i realise they are safe spaces for themselves, i immediately aware of how in not a safe space for myself. I’m not a safe space for myself YET, but we’re working towards that.

I’ll ask clarifying questions to understand your experience better but I don’t center myself until it’s my turn or until you ask me to give you insight to my actions/thought process.

Right now we’re going to sit and talk about what’s on your heart, what hurt you & I’m gonna put to one side my reasons, my justifications, my issues.

I yearn for relationships where having a fight consists of taking turns to listen to each others qualms.

I think it’s also in my purpose to speak and write. I remember when I was a teen, I got a prophetic word that people will come from far and wide to hear me talk, but I fear my insecurities might hold me back/slow down the process

I’ve been thinking a lot about what successful life looks like to me, I’m tempted by the materialistic displays of it but ultimately I want to spend the rest of my days being relationally and spiritually rich. I mean my research is in ✨identity and belonging✨

Hopefully I have children by then, I want to buy my home that they’ll have as a landing pad in the west and their home in African where I’ll spend more and more time.

Then at 35-37, buy land in African country and transition to spending half the year there and the rest in London.

I want to spend my thirties in the hustle and bustle of the city, finish my PhD at 31 and build up a career that aligns with my ethics, do things that I never thought I’d do, but ultimately healing my nervous system

I feel like I’m seeing another wave of the spiritual survival strategy of ‘masking the African/Hoodoo spiritually behind the White western Christianity’ when ppl who are spiritual make refer to Jesus or the bible, I’m ‘okay I see you’ (I don’t think it’s intended to be revolutionary but it still is)

Reminder to self not pathologise all of your experiences. You are just humaning and that’s okay.

Last month, I got intentional about doing SHORT meditations or breath work and I mean like 2-4minutes and I realised after 4/5minutes, I think “okay are we nearly done yet?” - so it’s important for me set the bar low as tempted as I am to do a 30min session, we gotsa be realistic my bwoi

noticing that I’m mindlessly speeding, numbing etc and giving myself choice. This also looks like implement moments of breath awareness

So I’m ushering in slowness this next month and given that it’s the holiday season, it’s so fitting for it and I’m excited. for me that looks like slowing down just a fraction but really that looks like growing in ‘noticing’
