.@avilewis.ca' climate policy is a distillation of decades of movement demands. It doesn't tinker - it goes right to the heart of it: standing up to parasitic industries & installing institutions that serve actual human & more-than-human wellbeing. #climatejustice

Our podcast is my fave of the legacy pieces that @climateunit.bsky.social is leaving behind as we close our doors.

Check out the full six-part "Markers of Emergency," and catch me in great company with Jim Stanford, Seth & Erin on episode 5: "Leave no one behind". πŸ™ŒπŸ½βœŠπŸ½

New podcast episode ft. @1alexhemingway.bsky.social of BC Policy Solutions and @sethdklein.bsky.social about this week's federal budget.

We chat housing, climate, austerity, the big tradeoffs in the budget, and of course, Zohran Mamdani πŸ™Œ

06.11.2025 17:41 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Most of the voices commenting on the budget today were unhappy, but I was struck by the CEO of a military drone company who seemed almost taken aback by how much of their work would be funded by this budget 🀨

Today's budget was underwhelming and troubling. Our leaders always have the choice of who makes the "sacrifice" β€” everyday people, the most vulnerable, big corporations, or the most wealthy. This budget asks us to tighten our belts while military & oil companies find themselves flush with cash.

05.11.2025 03:42 β€” πŸ‘ 23    πŸ” 7    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It's winning time!!! Mamdani's win caps off a brilliantly run campaign and gives us a shot in the arm for what movements already know: that we can & will win by telling the truth, demanding big things & refusing to dance with the establishment. Now watch the doubters pretend they were in all along!

The numbers say it all:
πŸ’° Global North paid climate finance since 2015 = $280bn
πŸ›’οΈ Profits for oil & gas companies headquartered there = $1.3tn

I actually don't think Canadians should prepare to make sacrifices so the military budget and AI investments can be scaled up, ultimately benefitting private contractors and big businesses.

Israel is piling crime on top of crime on top of crime.

No wonder it is determined to bring down the entire edifice of international humanitarian law - it's the only hope of protecting itself from consequences.

Btw: the allegations are significantly worse than bedbugs.

Full solidarity with the flotilla, which represents the very best of humanity.

And eternal shame to the European states who refused to protect it from Israeli assault and establish a corridor for aid to Gaza.

Malaysian national oil company Petronas just dumped 20% of its portfolio of Canadian gas assets - including a slice of its stake in LNG Canada - to MidOcean Energy… which is part owned by Saudi Aramco. Canada’s sole LNG export terminal is owned by four foreign NOCs. Nation-building projects anyone?

Every year we get a clearer picture of the opportunity cost of our current path of austerity and war.

Canada must step up to pay its fair share to the Global South, not as an act of charity, but as an act of unlocking climate action for all of us.

Crises are no time for timidity Canada's response to Donald Trump's economic attacks will require imagination and audacity. Canada can and should mobilize its own public institutions and Crown corporations to do the heavy lifting.

I always say that one of the best gifts that @sethdklein.bsky.social has given us is his economic imagination.

This is a very important piece on the real economic vision (drawn from wartime lessons) needed in this chaotic moment: www.nationalobserver.com/2025/04/02/o...
