Crises are no time for timidity Canada's response to Donald Trump's economic attacks will require imagination and audacity. Canada can and should mobilize its own public institutions and Crown corporations to do the heavy lifting.

I always say that one of the best gifts that @sethdklein.bsky.social has given us is his economic imagination.

This is a very important piece on the real economic vision (drawn from wartime lessons) needed in this chaotic moment: www.nationalobserver.com/2025/04/02/o...

COP29 was shameful.

Extremely important graphic. Israeli forces have killed more people in Lebanon (purple) than Hezbollah has killed in Israel (yellow) over the past year, by orders of magnitude.

On the current draft negotiating text that are informing the final hours of #COP29:

22.11.2024 20:42 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 3    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The way that Canada and other developed country governments have shown up at #COP29 has been nothing short of shameful. 9/9

22.11.2024 20:41 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

The majority demand for the new finance goal is $1.3 trillion. The current draft text offers a paltry $250 billion. For context, Africa alone spends $163 billion annually just to service debt, let alone invest in an energy transition.

22.11.2024 20:41 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Climate finance is supposed to support developing countries to create fiscal space for an energy transition instead of having to use all their resources fighting poverty and striving to build up their industries in the face of unfair trade agreements and debilitating debt.

22.11.2024 20:40 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

#Climatefinance is not charity: it is a debt owed to the dvping world for the historical responsibility that wealthy countries hold for the climate crisis, & their current disproportionate economic power, wrested through the stolen labour and resources of the Global South.

22.11.2024 20:40 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

This COP was critical for many reasons. One, it is likely the last chance to lock in commitments from the world's biggest climate culprit before an incoming Trump govt will pull the USA from the #ParisAgreement. The draft text defies the spirit of the PA.

22.11.2024 20:40 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The real winners of #COP29 are the fossil fuel lobbyists; the draft text on the table is nothing short of a victory of them. Gone are the pillars that would have enabled the next era of #climateaction: public, grant-based finance and adequate $ for adaptation & #LossAndDamage.

22.11.2024 20:40 β€” πŸ‘ 7    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

With almost 30 years of talks to build upon, there's no fathomable excuse or reason for the current negotiating text that developed countries have forced at #COP29, except blatant disregard for the lives of the global majority to the benefit of a wealthy few.

22.11.2024 20:40 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The #UNFCCC talks have lasted 30 yrs. We've had global conversations around critical demands like #LossAndDamage and #climatefinance to pay the Global North's climate debt to dvping countries. It was well-known that the current finance goal of $100bn was too low, met too late.

A thread on the current draft text that nations will be negotiating on in the final hours of #COP29:

About 1% of global GDP: that's the baseline ask of the world's wealthiest govts to curb the #climatecrisis, about $1.3tn. They instead produced a shamefully inadequate draft text at #COP29, with only $250bn on the table. It's a death sentence for much of the world. So much shame.
