Mainly he just had the misfortune to repeat some erroneous material from other sources, but he did add some of his own (I didn't go into detail on that - can DM you about it if you like!), all of which ended up being repeated because his book was such an important one for the history of AUL.

I love your AUL connections! Henry Fairfax was my introduction to the parish, and that led to all sorts of fascinating material! When I gave my talks on all of this at St Michael's I dedicated them to Bowman. My apologies for being a bit hard on Edwin Butterworth at one point, though!

From Jacobean โ€˜nonconformityโ€™ to Restoration Nonconformity: three rectors, one parish, and English Church turmoil in a nutshell The parish of Ashton-under-Lyne near Manchester had only three rectors for nearly the whole of the seventeenth century: Henry Fairfax from 1619 to 1643; John Harrison from 1643 to 1662; and Thomas ...

#earlymodern #17thC I'm not on here often, but...my first ever history article is out! It's about the goings-on in 17th C Ashton-under-Lyne. I've been passionate about 17th C history for decades, but it's not my official academic field so I'm very excited :) www.tandfonline.com/eprint/MZICG...

@jonathanhealey.bsky.social - I was finally able to start reading it last night - and it's not often I find myself guffawing simply reading the list of characters ๐Ÿ˜… Could hardly put it down to go to bed - superb history, brilliantly told!

Splendid to hear!! The paywall stopped me from reading all of his review, but I'm delighted!! I was wondering what he would make of another big book on the early 1640s ๐Ÿ˜€

#EarlyModern #17thC I'd be glad of some help with how assessments for these 3 levies were calculated. I'm researching a clergyman who paid ยฃ5 for the 1620 clergy Palatinate 'loan', over ยฃ6 in 1639 for the Scottish war (these seem rather steep!) and ยฃ1 6s 8d p/a (1634-36) for the repair of St Paulโ€™s.
