We used it because it has been established in the field to denote groups you don't necessarily identify or agree with, but I agree, the term itself can invite moralizing associations!

Intersectionality and care ethics in researching the far right Close-up research on the far right comes with inherent challenges related to issues of power, justice, and ethics, which are often gendered and intersect with other axes of inequality, like race, e...

Glad to see the conversation about ethics in research on the far right evolving. This recent commentary on care ethics by Iris B. Segers, @tamtagelashvili.bsky.social and Audrey Gagnon is highly recommended.
Wish I had such solid reflection at hand when I started researching the far right years ago.

What I also found is that paradoxically, the war failed to become a mobilizing factor for the far right. As the mainstream increasingly became anti-Russian, the far right lost its niche, as its other ideas were not shared by other parties and society.

The main issue it has mobilized around (well before the full-scale invasion) is its opposition to Russia, while other issues typically associated with the far right, like immigration, LGBTQ+ issues, minority rights, and law and order, fell into the background.

What I find is that the movement has lacked access to formal politics over the years, mostly mobilizing on the streets. It has also been mostly peaceful.

Contrary to Russian propaganda, the far right is far from having a direct influence on political processes in Ukraine. Contrary to Western media hype, it is also far from being a transnational far-right tourist hotspot.

Finally online! This was a challenging paper to write, as the far right in 🇺🇦 has been so politicized by Russia. But for this same reason, it is maybe also the most important paper I have written, studying the actual movement to counter misconceptions around it:
