I was extremely naive in my twenties and early thirties, took people very much at their word when it came to values, and absolutely destroyed my mental health (and my career) thinking I could publicly demand accountability and survive it whole.

death from disease in concentration camps is so widespread and so predictable that it's pretty clearly a feature, not a bug.

Epstein’s economic power among academics was made possible by a capitalist system that makes higher education dependent on the charity economy rather than a public good supported by taxing the rich

Another friend put it to me like this: "ICE has made the classic Nazi mistake. They've invaded a winter people in the winter."

DHS: Today, Border Patrol agents who were in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area as part of a targeted enforcement operation were repeatedly harassed and blocked by hostile crowds while simply trying to take bathroom breaks.
At each gas station where the agents stopped to use the restroom, groups of agitators appeared, yelled at them, stalked them, and even tried to prevent law enforcement vehicles from leaving, creating unsafe conditions. At one stop, individuals in the crowd threw food at the agents. At their final gas station stop, someone spit on an agent. When an agent moved to detain the person who spit on him, the crowed tackled and attacked the agents while surrounding them.
To safely clear the area agents had to use crowd control measures to disperse the hostile crowd.

Border Patrol agents are very sad that everyone in Minnesota hates them.

Democratic leaders need to fear being branded as collaborators more than they fear being called soft on crime

This guy went to work today, put a mask on, kidnapped a 5 year old child, and then used him as bait so both he and his father could be sent behind bars

Another common thread between Chicago and Minneapolis enduring these occupations:

Stage 5 pundit-brain is watching an innocent woman being killed by agents of the state and going, "hmm this says a lot about the urban-rural divide in America."

This is a critical point. What we're really witnessing is the *collapse* of law and order, brought about by Trump's lawless thugs. I think a lot of ordinary people intuitively understand that this is what's happening.

The latter part of this tweet has gone under the radar but it's an alarming escalation. The Trump admin has already detained dozens of people with full refugee status, seemingly those who had not yet adjusted to green cards, and is detaining them in Texas and seeking to strip them of their status.

Even in DC speak I’d take: β€œThis agency is hopelessly politicized and has a broken culture of violence and unquestioning loyalty to Trump. Its duties will be reorganized and reassigned to other law enforcement agencies. ICE was an experiment started in 2003 and it has failed.”

Lot of good perspective in here. Law enforcement agencies are their own political forces and have to respond to outside pressure, too, including from the public.

Tactical wins here include agencies and employees withdrawing support and slow rolling risky orders short of outright opposition.

Being right about trump was boring, tedious, partisan, ideological. Being wrong about trump? Heterodox, contrarian, free thinking.

Sure. But but it was way better for your career, and the esteem of many of your highly placed professional peers, to be wrong about this and so many people were. They’re doing great btw www.nytimes.com/2026/01/12/o...

My "What You Need To Know About Tear Gas" thread:

First, tear gas is a particulate, not an actual vapor or gas. In some cases, this means you can get some of the tear gas off your clothes by standing in a stiff breeze or strong fan.

The Trump administration has repeatedly targeted small and politically disempowered populationsβ€”Haitians, Somalis, trans peopleβ€”in order to justify abuses of power. But its abuses of power are not limited to those communities. What the government can do to the most vulnerable among us, it can also do to you.

The shooting in Minnesota is a reminder that while authoritarian governments may justify abuses of power by directing them at scapegoats or vulnerable populations, the goal is ultimately to deploy them against anyone they wish to www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

This is why I’m pushing for a state escrow account that holds federal funds before sending them on to Washington. If Trump wants to steal our tax dollars that were legally appropriated by Congress, then we should just be paying ourselves.
