A real problem rn: as USAID has retreated from pub health & as WHO is being defunded & cutting back, the Gates foundation has gained MORE influence. Govts & NGOs around the world will be even less likely to criticize Gates bc his (ill gotten) wealth is the last thing between life & death for them

I haven’y seen a piece on it (please point me to it if it exists), but Gates has had a PROFOUND effect on global public health, especially regarding HIV, and the Epstein stuff has not yet, I believe, caused an overdue reckoning with his extremely problematic influence in pub health

People care! Obviously it’s hard to do something always about problems that are far away or abstract…but as we see in city after city, ppl use their bodies to defend their neighbors when the danger is near! (And they are often being supported by ppl far away sending whistles or money!!)

(I don't know who this "God" person is, but I am skeptical of their awareness of the kind of word churches have been doing for decades lmao!)

When something comes to your community, that's the perfect time to address a now local issue...locally!

And there are people who have been dealing with the violence of the border & migration for DECADES, in & out of presidential admins of both parties! And not just in the last 12 months!

I don't care for ppl pretending like all of this happened in 12 months (it did not) nor pretending like people don't care unless there is naked self interest on their doorstep. Ofc Minneapolis responded when ICE came to town! Ofc Surprise, Arizona responded when an ICE facilty came to their town!

It is not true that "no one cares unless it's in their backyard." ICE has been built up for yrs, & many Americans have been opposed to these camps (& to incarceration in general) for years. Ofc, when abstract plans turn into concrete plans, local communities resist in concrete ways. This make sent.

In the article, I think the growing concern is that as sites materialize and plans advance, concern and opposition become concrete and grow as a result. The concern grows from the abstract to the specific in response to specific projects, which makes sense
