When you have an audience or a business you have to ensure that you always provide a lot more value to people than you extract from them. If you don't then, long term, it all breaks down.

Young people I talk to today...they feel like the whole entire world has broken this contract with them.

Clock showing the correct time but the wrong date. Saying 10th December

Stuck in A&E and either the wait has got stupidly long and ive been here nearly 10 months. Or maybe the clock needs adjusting

and by comparison
"This is significantly lower than one of our Nest default funds. For example, our Nest 2045 Retirement Date Fund (in its growth phase) has around 39.8% exposure to the US."
How your pension is invested is a significant ethical choice. I don't want my pension invested in Trumps US

It took me 2 weeks to get this info. But if you have a Nest pension this might be relevant
"In response to your first question, we can confirm that the Nest Ethical Fund (in its growth phase) currently has the lowest exposure to the US of all our funds. Around 0.3% of the fund is invested in the US"

Jen AI Must Die by MLRamirez A Micro Game for the 48-Word Game Jam

I snuggled up with my cat and spent a very pleasant hour making a micro-game for the 48-Word Game Jam.

It is entirely humanmade and firmly anti-genAI. πŸš«πŸ’―

This week I'm also trying to review my digital work flow and see how much I can move away from US dependent services. Linux, open source and european alternatives needed I think. Considering proton email as a first big step!

For many work age people, are pension pot may be the biggest way we can try and be a positive influence in the world. The pension companies should be working for us. Yes that means helping pots grow but we also want choice in how we invest. It is a powerful signal.

UK folk, if you have a Nest pension i highly recommend checking which pot your money is invested in. AND now is a great time to ask Nest to explain if they are investing in USA treasury bonds? Ask why? Ask what plans they have to keep your pension safe in the case of America defaulting on its debt.

A boycott doesn't need to be perfect to be impactful. Every Β£1 we direct away from USA to other countries helps. Buying local and independent is best but even a partial boycott has the potential to be helpful.

wikipedia turns 25 today! the last unenshittified major website! backbone of online info! triumph of humanity! powered by urge of unpaid randos to correct each other! somehow mostly reliable! "good thing wikipedia works in practice, because it sure doesn't work in theory" - old wiki adage

We should treat social media like bikes. It's dangerous for kids to ride adult bikes on roads but helpful to learn future skills for kids to ride kid designed bikes in safer locations. Social media doesn't need to be an all or nothing choice. We can make social media work for young people.

Photo of a black and white book describing a kissing game. The full text on the page says.

PARTNERS' PLEASURE

A MAN and a girl are chosen to start partnerless. The others pair off quickly, for a player is safe only when in the company of, and indeed kissing, a member of the opposite sex. It is the object of the two partnerless players to catch a couple off their guard, that is, not kissing. This is the only way in which the partnerless ones can themselves achieve partners. Some time may elapse before they succeed

Then a black and white drawing of multiple people kissing with the following caption.

You can at least choose your partners for this game; choose them well.

I love collecting old books that contain games. Especially what we might call party games. Usually they are relatively tame and restrained but occasionally I find something unexpectedly frisky. This game from the 1940s called Partners Pleasure is a great example of our randy grandparents. πŸ’‹

I think the world feels less stable and less predictable. From pandemics to war and economic instability, it creates a feeling of danger and uncertainty. We feel it and it is easier to attribute the cause to something we believe we can have more influence over.

One advantage of starting up fresh as a solo freelance worker is I get to start with a clean slate. For me this means achieving inbox zero. How long can I keep it up?

Anyone else noticing American companies (especially game companies) are getting less and less reliable for UK and European delivery. The customer service seems to boil down to "we are prioritising US customers". Seems clear what they think of us

The real question is not "Why is Bluesky so left-coded," the real question is "Why can't the right exist in a social media environment without algorithmic assistance, where people can ignore them"

I wonder if an appetite for authenticity (however we define that) in an age of ai auto response emails and slop will bring us back to paper communication. I know I treat handwritten communication different to another email.
