It saves him the shame of having to order food.
Remember he doesn't know how to order wine or donuts even in his home country.
Imagine how badly he would bungle this in another county.

Let’s walk back to where we started. What motivates Trump? The answer is simple: racism. You might also say ego and raw self-interest, but the two are connected. Racism, among other things, is a kind of chauvinism, a belief in one’s inherent superiority, based on nothing other than a meaningless accident of birth. It’s an ideology that papers over feelings of inadequacy, that tells you that β€” no matter what you have or have not accomplished in your life β€” you’re still better than someone, some group.

Let’s suppose you’re the spoiled son of a self-made man. Let’s suppose that, despite your flash and bravado, you’ve failed at virtually everything you’ve tried. You’re the laughingstock of polite society, a punchline for the privileged. You think you’re superior enough to be the president of the United States β€” the highest honor in your country β€” but the actual president is a man of humble origins, a minority of the kind your family didn’t even rent to when you were in the landlord business. And he is claiming power that rightfully belongs to you. He’s even mocking you, ridiculing you for all the world to see.

For years, a cottage industry of political observers has contorted itself to obscure and occlude the obvious. That regardless of what others see in him, Trump’s entire political career β€” from his embrace of birtherism to his hatred of birthright citizenship β€” cannot be understood outside the context of his bitter, deep-seated racism.

Please take the time to read this superb @jamellebouie.net column. It establishes a baseline of truth for anyone who wants to think, talk, and write honestly about Trump. www.nytimes.com/2026/02/07/o...

Racism has a material impact on people's lives. I don't know what else to say. It leads to premature death on a daily basis.

In the last hour, dozens of GOP lawmakers began to denounce Trump's racist meme.

Minutes ago, the White House capitulated and deleted the post.

If those same lawmakers showed that same level of moral clarity when it comes to the Constitution & fair elections, the White House would capitulate.

Look if I let myself start crying about all the women, especially women of color, that I saw pushed out of physics and astronomy by people who subscribe to sexist and racist views, I truly might never stop

The things I saw and heard

the grief feels enormous and bottomless

It is really infuriating to see how misogyny really does unite men across the sociopolitical spectrum. And, in so far as the Epstein files go, they sort women into two categories: fuckable or irrelevant. When they near a hint of accountability they complain about not being able to make women prey.

The public library is an essential component of a 21st-century left political project as an example of both what is already available to us and what can be improved upon in the future. The library is a public good, and it is free as a public service.

I want more people to make the connections.

"Schumer got the GOP into a position where the only thing being argued over is DHS funding."
We are the ones who made DHS funding into a topic of discussion.

how are you going to "rein in" the DHS? If it isn't a full disarming of them, allowing them no weapons whatsoever, it's useless. It's easier and more effective to not give them any new funding.

Pretti did not make a "tragic mistake by interfering with ICE agents." He helped a woman being tear gassed, and he was murdered for it. He's a victim of a crime, and this is victim blaming.

To be crystal clear: the police will never save us from ICE. Across the country, time and time again, they are HELPING ICE. To break ICE's power, we have to separate ICE from the violence and enforcement mechanisms of the police.
