See, it has to be secret because the Democrats might mess everything up by finding something sensible in it to agree with. That would mean that they'd have to denounce the whole plan as communism, and then they'd have to start all over again to come up with a plan without anything sensible in it.

I don't think the flags do more to put a target on one's back than living in Little Village does. They're an emblem of not surrendering, or, when Anglos fly them (as I see more and more) a symbol of solidarity.

This is the whole problem. People with conservative personalities are uncomfortable with anything unfamiliar. Conservative demagogues pander to them, telling them that unfamiliar things will destroy the country and must be defeated permanently.

It's purple, but leans Democratic. Like most of the of the municipalities near Chicago, it's shifted significantly towards Democrats in the last decades. Someone who's lived in the area a long time might think of it as heavily Republican.

Open book tests CAN be designed to be tough.

The interesting question here is whether this test was designed as a formality or to weed recruits out. I'm guessing the former. However, that's based on what I know of ICE, not on the exam being open book.

I was a bit relieved to learn what's being demolished is the East Wing, which dates to 1942 and later. It's a good copy of the neoclassicism of the rest of the building, not the irreparable loss other parts of the building would be. I'll take my consolations where I can find them.

The only ones *really* fighting antisemitism are Evangelical Christians. Jews always fight antisemitism the wrong way because they don't understand that their true purpose is to go to Israel to trigger Jesus' Second Coming.

Good read, but the "Crisis" of the title was an intense disagreement over the Biblical support for slavery.

Southern theologians effectively created fundamentalism to support the idea that the Bible must be ready to support slavery.

My local Indivisible group expects crowds to be roughly ten times the number of RSVPs. No one expects everyone to RSVP, but RSVPs help the group plan how many marshals are needed and the like.

RSVPs are useful to the organizers but not expected. The group that has organized my local demonstrations generally predicts attendance of about 10× the RSVPs.

Big protests are a good start, but, if you read Chenowith, you'll learn that 3.5% isn't magic and that usually resistance has to involve something more than mass demonstrations.

Don't let them make you think politics is something to be avoided. If our country has a soul, we've built it through politics, starting with the Declaration of Independence's statement we have "unalienable Rights."

People don't choose where ICE shows up. This isn't Broadview where people are choosing to demonstrate, it's a street on which people can get caught up in this mess against their will.

Illinois decided to fight fire with fire after 2020, and now could come up with one more seat... maybe. Or, if it miscalculated , it could lose two seats. NY geography makes it hard for it to do much. CA is really the whole game.

It's worth understanding that cable networks don't have broadcast licenses (which are for over-the-air stations). Cable service providers are somewhat regulated, but cable content providers are treated essentially like movie studios or newspaper publishers under the first amendment.
