I don't have one of my guitars right now, my first one. I've had it for 22 years, and I swear I can feel the distance between me and it at any moment.

Now I'm in London. It's a relief not swimming upstream from the spiral of everything outside New York.

But it's sad this time. I miss it. I miss every damn dumb New Yorker and the Mets and the burning smell of every food cart and the rank piss smell of the subway stations.

New York found me. I dreamed about it ever since I was a kid in the Detroit 'burbs. I lived a block from my best friend, met my partner of a decade, and my wife of a lifetime.

I've never ever felt more home than every street of New York. It's my bones through and through. It met me beneath my feet

I could still draw the skyline with the coca cola and yahoo signs, and see you at Thee Parkside every Sunday for a comedown.

My time in San Francisco was ultimately lonely, in spite of making some wonderful friends who I still love.

I had a view of the whole bay from my window, falling asleep to the sunrise smoking cigarettes between working 60 hours weeks.

I left Chicago after a brief series of wild events that left me unemployed, single, motorcycle wrecked, attended the most painful funeral of my life to date, and utterly broke.

I landed a job that moved me to the West Coast and far from just a devastating betrayal.

In London at night, far off, you can see flashes of light off the third rail of the overground.

I was confused about it before feeling nostalgic for my time in Chicago 20 years ago, and it was the obvious thing ever.
