This Kentuckian’s trip to Canada was met with curiosity, sadness, and pity | Opinion OpEd: We wondered what Canadians think of us; mostly they wonder why we are letting so much harm come to us and our country.

Lovely essay from @ivystone.bsky.social about her summer trip to Canada, and how our neighbors are feeling about the current situation.

This is not a drill.

If it takes each Dem Senator speaking for 24 hours until the end of the term, passing the mic from one to the next, the SAVE Act must NOT become law.

It was great--1,500+ here in Lexington, KY.
Let's have a national 'take back our flag day' on June 14th.

I was one of the organizers. The people were invited to tell their stories about how they are being impacted by the cuts/firings/chaos. Their stories were so amazing, one after another. It was deeply moving and powerful

We did! And people wrote their stories on 6” x 8” cards, so even those who didn’t get to speak will have their stories told. We will deliver these to Barr. All 800 of themβ€”we ran out of cards after that!

Sunday, March 23 Local

An amazing event. People were invited to tell their stories of how their lives are being impacted by the cuts/firings/chaos. Dozens spoke--stories that were authentic, smart, and deeply moving. Veterans, teachers, teens and elders--a great day for democracy.

It was an amazing event. People were invited to tell their stories of how they are being impacted by the cuts/firings/chaos. The stories were amazing, moving, smart, with a deep love of community and country and a deep, deep concern about what is happening. It was civil, respectful. And intense.

Come to the People's Town Hall on March 22nd, 10-12, and share your concerns and questions for Congressman Barr.

Totally agree--doesn't sound true. Other MOCs are holding town halls, in both parties. I think it has more to do with Barr's disastrous 2017 'town hall' in the packed Lafayette HS auditorium, where he side-stepped all questions and was resoundingly booed. But yes, the irony if it were true.

25.02.2025 13:20 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes, sorry for the typo. Capitol police, that's what they said. Truly unbelievable.

Because, you know, his constituents in Lexington are so scary.

I met with his office staff last week for half an hour+ to go over the inaccuracies in a letter he had sent me and others about Elon Musk. I closed with a request that he hold a town hall. They said he had been advised by the capital police not to have any meetings because of security.

Have you heard about the SAVE Act? It's the newest effort at voter suppression by the House GOP & it's important for all of us. If you're a married woman or someone who doesn't have their birth certificate/passport handy, you're especially going to want to see this. open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...

We were peaceful Americans, worried about democracy. Why did Mitch McConnell’s office call police? | Opinion OpEd: Author Kim Edwards went to Sen. Mitch McConnell’s Lexington office because no one answers the phones. Then police showed up.

I was surprised that they wouldn't let us in, 2 x 2, to talk. If they had, there wouldn't be video of them having the police escort us out.

8/Why such fear on that staffers face? Why the refusal to see constituents? Why call the police on a group of senior citizens?

06.02.2025 17:56 β€” πŸ‘ 7    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

7/We were not a fearsome group. Just citizens, deeply upset by the assaults on our democracy, who wanted to have our concerns heard by the person we pay to represent us. That's democracy.

06.02.2025 17:55 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

6/When we asked why not, she turned around abruptly and scurried back into the office and locked the door, taking most of the comment forms with her. Our group of gray heads was then escorted out by the police and forced to leave the premises.

06.02.2025 17:55 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

5/They came out. The next two tried to enter but were not buzzed in. Police went to inquire. After a pause, a blond female staffer, middle aged and very nervous, came out with the police and started handing out comment forms. We were not allowed to speak to the staffer after all, police said.

06.02.2025 17:55 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

4/Eventually the staffer agreed to see us 2 x 2. First two people went in. Very civil conversation, they said after--they were polite and expressed their concerns calmly. Not at all threatening. One did try to video, was asked to stop, agreed immediately, put the phone away.

06.02.2025 17:54 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

3/We expressed amazement that we could be trespassing when it's our tax dollars that pay the rent on the building and the salaries of our Senator and his staff.

06.02.2025 17:53 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

2/We were refused entry. Police were called. We were told we were trespassing and to remove ourselves from the sidewalk outside the building. We were told we could go to the nearest public sidewalk on Harrodsburg Road, which was far, far away.

06.02.2025 17:53 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

1/ Went to Mitch McConnell's Lexington office today with about two dozen other people, the youngest among us around 50. Gentle, calm group. Our goal was to express deep concern about Russell Vought, architect of Project 2025, nominated for OMB with plans to shut down the federal government.
