I suppose if the question here is 'why don't these fields produce new discoveries at the same rate as the sciences' the answer is a pretty obvious, 'because they're not funded like the sciences.'

We could do a lot of archaeology with, say, a few billion dollars a year!

A tweet by Theo Nash, which reads, "The problem is that (almost) no one, at least in the humanities, is able to produce โ€˜new knowledgeโ€™ at anything like the rate expected. So scholars grasp at faddish trends and voguish theories to publish books that seem exciting in the moment but have no enduring value."

Maybe this is simply a difference in the expected 'rate' of knew knowledge, but this take puzzles me, because there's quite a bit of new data and studies needing to be done that I can see pretty easily in Roman history.

Knowledge creation steady and clearly visible.

a foundational belief of the modern right is that there is no such thing as organic disagreement with their policies, itโ€™s all directed from the top down

they just canโ€™t conceive that ordinary people find them horrifying

I don't think this is quite true. Yes, the Biden Administration was an utter failure.

That said, I don't think we can understate the relative power of Trump in this: a lock grip over his own party, an opposition that was trending increasingly against Israel. He had close to unprecedented freedom

It's interesting in itself that the public's default reaction to whatever the government is doing seems to be "stop doing that, try the opposite". It suggests something quite profound is going wrong.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boyโ€™s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

โ€œMy world collapsed,โ€ Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICEโ€™s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

the reason that this is so galling is that the majority of Israelis are people expelled from other Muslim-majority countries, so (unsurprisingly) Israeli food has a lot in common with their neighbors'. most people don't know this, though, and think that it's all Ashkenazim.

For weeks, Mr. Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who is married to a U.S. citizen, has made clear that he would not challenge his deportation if he were sent to Costa Rica, which has promised him legal residency and guaranteed that he would not be sent back to El Salvador.

But the Trump administration has refused to deport him to Costa Rica, and in an earlier hearing this week, Judge Xinis pressed the administration to consider the option or clarify why it was unacceptable.

So Kilmer Abrego-Garcia will not challenge a deportation to Costa Rica, who has agreed to for him residency, but DHS wonโ€™t agree to send him there because itโ€™s not cruel enough.

In Chicago, four vehicles descended and eight ICE agents moved in to kidnap a child.

She screams, โ€œIโ€™m 15,โ€ as ICE yanks her from the car and kneels on her neck.

This is not about immigration enforcement.

It's about terrorizing Americans.
