I say this with the bluntness it requires: they will get people murdered if this continues. This is not just populism anymore either: it’s completely unhinged and a deliberate choice that does endanger lives. I am not saying this lightly at all.

sorry: they attempted to assassinate a critic, and then used their own attempted murder to call for a military invasion of a US city

Giving a talk today on industry capture in social media research and incidentally received a peer review stating that all evidence social media causes harm of any sort is shoddy.

Starmer offering to forge a very very late game alliance to counter the MAGA/Reform partnership has the vibes of someone who just chugged a handle of Everclear and wrecked their car wandering into traffic to give tips to the passengers of another drunk driver.

it's not the main thing but something else this story shows is that instead of a government program to house people the city was outsourcing this to nonprofits. Common failure mode of progressive governance tbh bsky.app/profile/kate...

I feel like the UK is an even more dramatic own-goal than we are, because Lanour right now is like an alternate universe where Harris won & decided to implement like 80% of Project 2025 anyway because she liked Republicans more than her own voters.

I was very much in the same strain for a long time, and you're right that I will never be a normal mainstream lib. I don't see that as a bad thing. Very few former conservatives or conspirascists become useless White Moderates, even absolute dumb-dumbs like Joe Walsh actually believe in something.

There’s a lot of dynamics that go into populism, party swapping between low trust voters etc, but one that seemingly is *never* internalized correctly is the fact that appealing to an actual set of values is something that people wish to see affirmed in their leaders. Your friend is one of them.

trump has the same appeal but he gets less complicatedly by being a huge idiot crank himself.

bernie's secret sauce and why he is/was, relative to where he started from, an extremely successful politician, is that has has crank-appeal while being (aside from a few mostly harmless small things) an actual serious person, for example.

The vibe is:

"I'm frustrated that you're late, but I'm so happy you're here."

The tricky part is to figure out who's *actually* here to stay. But that's part of building community, too.

Search endlessly on all your social media for hints of reassurance or confirmation of doom to feed the desperate need for certainty, any certainty, your brain is desperately craving, like an addict frantically picking thru carpet for bits of lost Crack rock.

We’re in a moment now where it would be worth people taking three hours to watch Gandhi, particularly the scene of the salt march. There is value to making the brutality of your opponent so plain as day that no one can argue with it. The clarity of that brought down an empire

In an environment 6 points to the right of McGraths, Stevenson did 3% better than McGrath, and she nearly got the same margin in 2023 that Stumbo had gotten in 2019.

Regardless, Beshear should've run, and his refusal is a dereliction of duty.

Kind of a perfect storm here of a military running on over 250 years of answering to an elected government staring down the barrel at an American Monarchy, said king being pretty much an outed pedophile and child trafficker, and the king's Marshall being a stumbling idiot drunk everyone hates.

If the other party were using the military to terrorize my voters I would just refuse to vote for that military to get paid, but I guess I'm just built different.

One of the more incredible stories out of LA this year has been how a taco review blog became the best on-the-ground coverage of ICE raids in the city.

They do a dispatch every day, follow-up on the kidnapped people (which almost no media outlet has done), and fact-check government claims.

There are some very strange things going on at the Library of Congress. I’m doing searches for news articles from the Civil Rights Era. Political cartoons. That sort of thing. They used to be easily found.

That stuff is VERY hard to find now. Things are missing, people.

Does this kind of surprising development change the threat environment or relieve any of the crushing responsibility we all bear to save ourselves? No. But it is worth noting. I see fractures widening, not closing. A lot of Union soldiers in the civil war started a LOT more racist than they ended it

I do see it a bit differently, here in Montana city police literally muscled CBP officers of the arrest of 3 of my friends for allegedly blocking the building driveway to ensure they went into City lockup, where they made bail the same day, & took seized phones away from CPD to return them.

Point of fact, if what Ken claims about NVE was true, the Heritage Foundation wouldn't be pushing TIVE.

I'll also point out his complete dismissal of the systematic exploitation of children for profit and murder by an international criminal network that obviously exists is pretty suspect.
