The accumulated waste of generations of mass consumption is decaying in landfill, + the chemicals those goods were drenched in - lead, mercury, cadmium, PFAS, PCBs - are seeping slowly back out into water, soil + air.

🤚🌊 Hands off our water!

@ec.europa.eu plans to revise the Water Framework Directive after mining industry's request. This puts our drinking water, rivers, wetlands, and wildlife at risk.

Europe must protect its waters, not sell them for short-term industrial gain 🛑

Announcing that you plan to revise the Water Framework Directive to make it easier to mine raw materials—which no doubt will benefit defence contracting, further fueling the war machine—sure is a choice, and the European Commission made that choice. Outstanding, truly.

Firefighting foam, one of the key sources of PFAS pollution in Lake Zug, was historically made with PFOS + PFOA. Both these varieties of PFAS are now internationally banned due to links to cancers, ulcerative colitis, liver, thyroid+ kidney disorders.

Moreover this vote shows shameless politicking of EPP siding with far-right groups in European Parliament to push through its disastrous #deregulation agenda that cuts protections for people and planet.

It's another step forward towards Trumpification of EU politics & should worry us greatly.

But then Michelle Sneed (former USGS hydrologist) did a series of them around the central valley, because they are an excellent data visualization and science communication tool to convey the magnitude of change. These are a few examples.

For some reason it bothers me a lot that this doesn't acknowledge that this graphic is a remake of two sets of very important USGS historical photos documenting & visualizing land subsidence from groundwater withdrawals in CA's Central Valley.

Yes, the USGS work is public domain, but still.

It goes both ways, too. Precautionary principle (being stringent with limits when the effects of a substance on human health are still being studied or studies are non-conclusive) is a policy-making decision, not a scientific one.

We all know the OECD definition is very broad, and that you can't regulate certain compounds the same as others, but that is a policy-making issue, not a scientific one. You don't change the definition of an orange just because you can't grow oranges in your USDA zone—same goes for this.

The thing that happens with PFAS (and that the signing scientists make very clear) is that we keep getting obfuscation by conflating science with policy-making decisions, oftentimes in bad faith.
