Nature lover, bibliomaniac, worrier. Yes, those are some of my bookshelves. I am still not an Algerian news network. Maybe I should have picked a different user name this time. Banner pic: tightly packed paperback fiction. Profile pic: egret.

Periodically my dad will show up to my house unannounced and do β€œis my daughter still insane” inspections. Usually I fail. Like the time there was a horseshoe crab* living in my kitchen? Yeah. I failed that time. That’s on me.

If he comes by any time soon I am definitely going to fail inspection.

Are there any fantasy artists seeing this who sell blank greeting cards of their work? I'm in the market, having run out of them.

Yes, I still send cards. Paper ones. Through the mail. And I need more cool ones.

No AI. Cannot stress that enough. Links to shops appreciated. Reposts are good, too.

Just a regular reminder to please support your local theatre, cafΓ©, bookstore, bakery, and library. We breathe life into these places when we support them.

Without us, they can't survive, and truthfully, without them, neither can we.

Photo of the base of an oak tree with a fresh gash

Help my 9yo daughter! We walk past this oak every day in the way to school. This morning she noticed a mysterious gash at the base of the tree. We’re trying to figure out what caused it. Is it a human or a wild creature? I say human but she hopes not.

when people ask "what's the wildest thing you've ever pulled out of a sewer?" i'm going to just start answering "tree."

I saw a headline
which ominously noted
β€œPrehistoric killer superbug

to 10 modern antibiotics,
study warns,”
but do not worry
for it is in ice,
so you only need worry

Label on a carton of kiwis, featuring a semi-anthropomorphic fruit. It has tiny arms and legs and is holding a spoon. It also has large eyes, but the really terrible thing is its grinning mouth, which covers over half its body. Instead of teeth, the smile exposes a slice of kiwi. The monster is standing on another, much larger sliced kiwi, presumably a vanquished foe.

Hand-drawn map of the US, labeled "Pancake Time Zones, with an inset showing Britain with the label "Shrovetide Exclusionary Zone." The US is broken into time zones, with each time zone labeled and colored thus:
EST: colored orange and labeled "Dinner"
Central Time: colored teal and labeled "Lunch"
Mountain Time: colored blue and labeled "Brunch"
Pacific Time: colored red, and labeled "Breakfast"

Britain in an inset box in the lower right corner, colored pink (as it traditional) and is labled: "Isle of Shroves"

Now...you can disagree with this all you like, but it's right there on the map. So who should we trust? Your intuition about when pancakes should be eaten? Or the world's only authentic pancake time zone map?

It is Shrove Tuesday! Again!

And, as is tradition here at Surprised Eel History & Maps, here's your map of established pancake timezones in the US, and your reminder that the UK is in an exclusionary zone meaning that griddle cakes of all sorts are acceptable at all hours today.

SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without AI, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...

SIMON: What?

SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...

SIMON: You imagine that?

SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.

SIMON: I don't think AI can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.

SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an AI and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.

SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

It is a very cold and wintery scene; even being high in the sky, the sun is still very much to the south instead of being more overhead like it will be in a few more months.
