I am university #professor and professional #screenwriter who loves all things #scifi, and uses this space to amplify and discuss works of the genre in print, film, and television.
My next project.
Heโs the mostly highly-placed foreign operative in the U.S. governmentโ and heโs the President.
This is the best news in a time of terrible news! It would have been my life dream to work on that show. Break a leg and I'll be watching!
20.02.2025 17:28 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I have been so excited since I found out this would be announced today! RIP any ability for me to concentrate: www.apple.com/tv-pr/news/2...
20.02.2025 17:09 โ ๐ 7783 ๐ 1563 ๐ฌ 461 ๐ 743The love story was good and I enjoyed the first half. They should have leaned into that. Once they went down into #TheGorge, I starting telling my son about a better version of this story that he can read called, ANNIHILATION.
15.02.2025 15:24 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I think the first hour is worth a watch. I enjoyed it. Then, it narratively descends into the hell of a bad video game plot.

A version that leaned more on romance, character, separation and survival -- with a scaled-down monsters in the middle keeping them apart storyline -- would have played to the story's strengths, making the movie more unique and memorable. Alas, everything always has to be bigger. #TheGorge
15.02.2025 15:19 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The filmmakers and/or studio likely felt they needed big action to go with the love story to fulfill the premise and meet genre expectations, so they spent a lot of money and time on effects, creatures, and storylines we've seen before, and in so doing lost the heart of the film. #TheGorge
15.02.2025 15:19 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0So I watched #THEGORGE last night, then slept on it. The love story is great and it saves the movie. Sadly, the mystery and horror of "the gorge" turn out to be cliched, hackneyed, and derivative.
15.02.2025 15:19 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0I love these books and greedily gobbled them up. $2.99 is a steal and you should jump on it if you haven't already. Space-oriented alt history that is female forward and thoroughly brilliant. And, like, it won The Hugo, so....
13.02.2025 20:35 โ ๐ 26 ๐ 7 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Loving ORBITAL by Samantha Harvey. It's taken my brain a moment to transition from the high-concept plotty stuff I've been reading lately into this meditative exploration of Earth and the human condition. It's poetic, beautiful, detailed, and a fantastic read before bed. tinyurl.com/42ca876k
13.02.2025 20:29 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I watch all the B-movies I can find and give them at least fifteen minutes. Glad Mr. Jane got the work, but I would probably spend my precious #SciFi time elsewhere. Maybe 2018 Pedro Pascal in the "low" budget PROSPECT? www.justwatch.com/us/movie/pro...
09.02.2025 17:12 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I could not stay with it, mostly because I was expecting space and lots of Thomas Jane and it wasn't that. It was a smorgasbord of #scifi tropes and themes stuffed into one movie. No thanks. I prefer a deep-dive to a survey course. www.justwatch.com/us/movie/war...
09.02.2025 17:12 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Okay. I love #TheExpanse. I thought it was the best space-based #scifi TV since Battlestar. Read all the books twice. Own the comics. My car is named Rocinante. I'm all in. So, I saw Thomas Jane (love him) wearing a space suit in the preview image of this movie on Hulu called WARNING.
09.02.2025 17:12 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I'd love recommendations on other non-white, indigenous, post-colonial first-contact SciFi as I continue the work of building my new universe.
08.02.2025 14:07 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The most read/watched first-contact fiction has been written by traditionally white writers. Who knows first contact better than colonized peoples? ASTROTOPIA (to be discussed again) by @mjrubenstein.bsky.social alerted me to this reality, which lead me LAGOON. It's must read. They both are.
08.02.2025 14:07 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Beginning first-contact fiction research for my new novel project, I came across LAGOON (Embarrassingly late. I'm mortified.) by the incomparable @nnedi.bsky.social, and it is transformative. A stunning work of African Futurism. A read-it-in-a-day masterpiece of vision, depth, and possibility.
