The love story was good and I enjoyed the first half. They should have leaned into that. Once they went down into #TheGorge, I starting telling my son about a better version of this story that he can read called, ANNIHILATION.

I think the first hour is worth a watch. I enjoyed it. Then, it narratively descends into the hell of a bad video game plot.

A version that leaned more on romance, character, separation and survival -- with a scaled-down monsters in the middle keeping them apart storyline -- would have played to the story's strengths, making the movie more unique and memorable. Alas, everything always has to be bigger. #TheGorge

The filmmakers and/or studio likely felt they needed big action to go with the love story to fulfill the premise and meet genre expectations, so they spent a lot of money and time on effects, creatures, and storylines we've seen before, and in so doing lost the heart of the film. #TheGorge

So I watched #THEGORGE last night, then slept on it. The love story is great and it saves the movie. Sadly, the mystery and horror of "the gorge" turn out to be cliched, hackneyed, and derivative.

I love these books and greedily gobbled them up. $2.99 is a steal and you should jump on it if you haven't already. Space-oriented alt history that is female forward and thoroughly brilliant. And, like, it won The Hugo, so....

Okay. I love #TheExpanse. I thought it was the best space-based #scifi TV since Battlestar. Read all the books twice. Own the comics. My car is named Rocinante. I'm all in. So, I saw Thomas Jane (love him) wearing a space suit in the preview image of this movie on Hulu called WARNING.

I'd love recommendations on other non-white, indigenous, post-colonial first-contact SciFi as I continue the work of building my new universe.

The most read/watched first-contact fiction has been written by traditionally white writers. Who knows first contact better than colonized peoples? ASTROTOPIA (to be discussed again) by @mjrubenstein.bsky.social alerted me to this reality, which lead me LAGOON. It's must read. They both are.
