Can't believe that in the space of a season I've gone from not caring about F1 to "I can't believe Verstappen needs to rely on a Ferrari driver to have a chance at the championship".

It's burned into my brain because we had to rewind to see "where did they get "Manchester"?"
Henceforth known was "suprise Manchester".

I've considered starting a spreadsheet to track it, just to see which _are_ correct. I can probably go back through my recent watchlist and sent a DM?

That being said: we thought we'd finally see what Yuri on Ice was all about (I know, I know) and the intro has different captions every time.

I've got a new piece at @lseimpactblog.bsky.social today following on from my previous piece about the British Library cyberattack and arguing that, since the UK Government clearly doesn't care about the UK knowledge sector, we need to develop our own community-led tech and infrastructure solutions.

See also: suddenly lactose intolerance for a year or so, "one slice of pizza will end me" era, occasionally periods of "no coffee for me" and whatever it is in beer that provides the "50% chance of a bad time" experience.

IBS is such a silly condition sometimes, because what do you mean I can't eat food anymore I've eaten without a problem for years, instead I'll be in absurd levels of pain when I do. This will continue for an unknown length of time.

Counterpoint: my recent favourite piece of media was made 100x better by the brilliant translation and localisation, and probably why I watched beyond the first episode (and bought physical copies). Considering finding out who translated it so I can email their employers my thanks.

I'm not surprised, as it's the culmination of the undervaluing (and disrespect, even) of translation as a skill. The amount of shitty translations I've seen recently is starting to really anger me and it puts me off using services.

Reposting this for more leads - please, ANY contacts in the licensing dept for the Science Museum?? I've waited months for email replies, and calling the numbers I've been given just gets hold music, answerphones and occassionally weird calls where they cut out or it's just white noise.

I'm glad to have signed this statement in support of queer and trans staff at the National Library of Scotland, who by the sounds of it are going through an awful time at the moment: docs.google.com/document/d/e...

(But then I've also experienced The Barrel™ where I really wish I could have refused a vast number of metrics/indices, but alas.)

Ultimately, the promotion/hiring/prestige system needs to change in tandem (or at least eventually) for the entire thing to become sustainable.

17.11.2025 09:44 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Personally, I heavily agree. I think the difficulty is both in balancing the need for funding and that for some these metrics are directly tied to employment/promotion. I have had to ask myself if I have the backbone to say no in the face of someone's employability and the answer was no, admittedly.

17.11.2025 09:42 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Absolutely. I've been considering writing about it as we're doing nothing but (re)shackling ourselves with different chains as long as we don't reject these metrics. As long as we rely on infrastructure (in the broadest sense) that only exists to exploit labour and extract value, we're borked.

There's something ironic about a country so preoccupied with Remembrance courting Nazi policies so openly.

The pain I feel reading this as a bs metric (JIF especially) hater, forced to accept and embrace that nefarious metric.

AI Is Supercharging the War on Libraries, Education, and Human Knowledge "Fascism and AI, whether or not they have the same goals, they sure are working to accelerate one another."

Librarians told 404 Media they're being inundated with new pitches for AI library tech and catalogs are being flooded with AI slop books.

But more broadly, AI maximalism across society is supercharging the ideological war on libraries, schools, government workers, and academics.
