The hardest thing about being bilingual is that in English I only have access to one, default accent. No more posho accent I can put on, and more critically: no more chav accent that makes everyone *just* a little bit anxious and worried about what you may be unleashing.

The worst thing is, I'm good at cooking! I even enjoy it (when not tired) - I have good quality rice and pasta, 101 spices and condiments, fresh veg and a list of easy recipes! I'm just deeply inept it seems.

The real struggle of adulthood is eating regular, balanced meals when there's no one else around who also needs to eat. Nothing stopping me from eating some berries, watermelon, and pickles from the jar and calling it a day.

📢 Applications open for the 2026 Software Sustainability Institute Fellowship on 11 August, just a couple of weeks away, closing 6 October! 🚀

You don't have to be writing software yourself, just interested in promoting good research software practice. It's UK-based but there are 3 places […]

The new journal is published by... @openlibhums.bsky.social.

This rarely gets mentioned in these press releases, but if you ever subscribed to Journal of Political Philosophy and appreciate the move away from for-profit publishers to an OA model, then your institution should support OLH.

My real beef with commercial publishing-based infrastructure is the absolute tonnes of labour we have to pour into work that will go absolutely nowhere because SMT and academic colleagues have bought into it 💀

I don't know, I can feel some strange form of kinship with an 8ft entity with three knees whose clothes don't subscribe to regular fabric physics forced into the appearance of a woman. Something poetic lurking in there. /s

(I do, however, think we need to examine much more closely why it is that DOAJ is the only "trusted" index for these types of checks - even if still very imperfect. And how we (don't) use them and what role they play.)

I see the sense in both - but I agree that DOAJ isn't currently in a position to do this nor is it wise to have a single org be responsible for it. There isn't a single, simply solution when an entire ecosystem needs to change.

*This exempts specialist tools and technologies, and 'traditional' machine learning etc. That's a whole different subject.

Women also don't have the same pressure to perform for the "homosocial" gaze and reinforce our social standing/perception through engagement with AI, which does seem to be the case for men at this time.

(Which is interesting, because women are often early adopters who drive most social innovations)

Something about not being allowed to be very wrong, very confidently and very publicly from a young age may have something to do with it 🤷‍♀️

(Though when we talk about actual ML as opposed the genAI, there will be the 'traditional' tech gender imbalance.)

Best place to hire developers to clean up my Al slop?
Question
I don't know how to code, but have built the beginnings of a project using Python + FastAPI. My project has around 50-60k lines of code. I have built this entirely using Al.
This is just a side hobby and the application is for personal use, so there's no jeopardy and no time pressure.
I'm obviously a proponent of Al-coding and I am pleased with where I've got my application to so far. I could keep going with Al alone, but l've been in a huge debugging ditch for months while I refine it.
I'm potentially interested in hiring a developer to tidy my application up and get it to actually work. I feel hiring an expert might actually take less time than with Al, due to a lot of the current issues clearly needing genuine coding knowledge rather than just making Al tools spit out code.
What are the best websites to hire people for this kind of work? And how much should I expect to pay?

Have now made a Freedom of Information Request, so let's see if we find out how much the University of Warwick paid Vogue Singapore to advertise one of their senior leadership team with photos of his wardrobe ('talent's own'). www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/cost...

To be fair to Vogue and the member of SMT, your dogs could also manage universities better!

Self-inflicted embarrassment for the University of Warwick — first it rebrands hyper-generically, then someone totally unhinged decides the *front page of the uni website* should say ‘Learn more about our Brand’.

Someone posted a video of a husband and wife shopping for interior decor. They wrote: "when will people finally acknowledge the epidemic of men marrying women and being turned gay."

Matt Walsh retweeted them and added: "Dudes like this were already gay. I’ve been married for 14 years and have never been home decor shopping, or even had an opinion on the subject, except for the one time when I had a painting custom made depicting me meeting a group of space aliens. It’s now hanging above a fireplace in our home."

I screenshot Walsh's comment and added: "For a while, it was believed that women and gay men are born with a natural sense for aesthetics. In reality, straight men, particularly American male Protestants, have simply barred themselves from taking an interest in aesthetics bc they think this makes them noble."

Finally, someone retweeted me and added: "Why does anyone listen to what this idiot has to say about aesthetics?" They attached a photo of Edward Hopper's 1942 painting "Nighthawks."

Someone took issue with me saying that American male Protestants are unique in how they've removed themselves from aesthetics. I thought it was obvs that I'm talking about fashion and interior decor, which today are coded as "gay interests," not paintings or architecture.

But let me elaborate. 🧵

Hispanic journalist in Atlanta detained by ICE speaks out Mario Guevara tells the AJC about his month behind bars, and his once positive feelings toward Donald Trump.

“I’m plainly convinced that my situation in this ICE jail is direct retaliation for my coverage,” Mario Guevara told @ajc.com in an exclusive interview from the Folkston, Georgia ICE detention center where he is currently detained, despite a judge's bail order. “I haven’t committed any crimes.”

Any specific themes/subject areas? @tristanoscars.bsky.social and I did a bit of a purchase suggestion marathon at Leeds + I used to work acquisitions and remember a fair number of titles.

Also if you're looking for specific intersectional stuff, lmk!

* Free cake up to 6 days after at Booths. Similar to Costa, but better quality cake 🍰 ! I do love me a little Booths trip.

So far we have:
* Free cake at Costa. A solid offer, but I'm a bit of a cake snob, unfortunately.

* 25% of the total bill at Revolution. A reminder that I'm not 21 anymore.

* 20% of at Dune. I do need summer shoes, so I'm not mad.

* 200 points at Eurostar. Meh.

It is time for my birthday tradition once more: what loyalty programmes/cards give me the best birthday freebies and discounts? I may have limited family, but luckily the companies taking my money 364 days a year have my back 😌

Last year's favourites:
* Neuhaus chocolate
* Lindt
* Booths

(It is a pet conspiracy theory of mine that many indexing services have at least degree of "I scratch your back, you scratch mine" going on for Big Journal Publishers. But then dealing with them is also the most challenging part of my job.)
